You can butter the bread with ANYTHING when making bread and butter pudding

This might seem so blooming obvious to most but I've only just discovered this!

Bread and butter pudding is a favourite here with two toddlers who love raisins and I often have stale butt ends of bread to use.

I don't know what made me twig this but as I was buttering the bread the other week, I realised I could add spreads to it as well

Cue two weeks of experimenting!

My favourites to far:
-Lemon curd on the bread with glacé cherries rather than raisins (always got some in the cupboard)
-Liberal spread of Nutella on the butter with some chocolate chips for good measure
-marmalade with orange zest through it

I am now two stone heavier but impressed with the endless possibilities (and realising I'm probably way behind on this!!)

Thank you for this- sounds amazing!!

You can also use other 'bread' products- croissants and pan au raisins are divine!

I think it was a Delia recipe that got me into using products other than butter. The lemon curd suggestion sounds delicious.

Bread and butter pudding made with hot cross buns and marmalade is elite!

I’ll just add … Apricot jam and chopped tinned peach slices

I used to be friends with someone who made it every time we went round for dinner, he made it with panettone and it was so delicious. They’ve moved to America now and I miss the bread and butter pudding more than the friends!

Yes, also you can make a savoury version, using mustard or marmite, cheese, onion, tomatoes, spinach, spices, ham, etc etc

I had to stop doing this due to weight gain too!! I dont like sweet bread and butter pudding but oozing with cheese and onion, yes please!

I make it with reduced doughnuts!
