General Election in May rumour

I heard this would be a possibility. Then saw an article today right down at the bottom of the topics on the DM website. I don't usually even scroll that far down. Can't see it myself as Tories not very popular. I will be voting Labour. Not that keen on them but certainly won't be voting Tory. Don't much like Greens or Lib Dems.

OP posts:

Vote for whoever you want it will still be the same old shit. There is no party in this country capable of leading and sorting out the issues

2dogsandabudgie · 11/02/2024 09:01

Agree with Tinkerbyebye - There's just too many big issues affecting this country now - the NHS, climate change, immigration, lack of affordable housing etc.

Big promises of spending billions to solve them but parties not saying where this extra money will come from.

Then you have people not wanting to take responsibility for themselves and expecting the Government to help them. There was a post on here the other day where the OP and her partner had £45,000 in savings but because she was pregnant and unable to work wanted to be able to claim benefits and keep her savings for a deposit for a larger house.

That’s the thing. Labour aren’t promising big spending. After a recent meeting with civil servants Starmer and Rachel Reeves have already backed down on the £28 billion greener economy plans (much to some folk’s dismay). I guess they are well aware how bad the economy is.

meditrina · 11/02/2024 09:10

I agree that there is no party properly up to the job.

But I expect Labour will win by a mile, not because people support them or such snippets of their agenda as they make public (gosh I miss the 70s when the opposition said more) but because they're not the Tories.

The Tories will have left as many unpopular messes for Labour to have to deal with, deliberately as a tactic to try to make Labour a single term administration.

Then the Tories will get through about 3 more leaders, because of the faction of pompous gits who don't realise that they've pretty much destroyed the party and that they're now turning moribund to dead.

Right-leaning voters with any form of intelligence or compassion have no political home at present.

The cognitive dissonance must be giving them a headache.

Oganesson118 · 11/02/2024 09:13

I don’t think it matters when it is. Elections in this country are largely won by the media and social media. Suspect Labour will win, though not by a Blair-style landslide but Reform will also gain a lot of ground.

Beezknees · 11/02/2024 09:17

I'll be voting Labour as I always have. There have been a lot of benefit bashing threads here lately which makes me wonder if the Tories are getting scared.

Let me a guess a load of posters arrived from fairyland to say ‘But why shouldn’t she claim benefits with savings? Do you want her in a workhouse?’ Lol

People aren’t bashing benefits. I’ve never seen anyone begrudge somebody with terminal cancer, quadriplegia or similar, benefits.

What they get fed up with is people choosing benefits rather than work for X or Y weak reason. Benefits are supposed to be a last resort because you cannot work, not just because you find it a bit hard or prefer not to.

You can't choose benefits as a preference to work, next.

Funny that because whenever somebody goes through a split or says they’re pregnant while unemployed the first thing anyone says it ‘have you checked what you’re entitled to’.

EffieeBriest · 11/02/2024 09:26

@Beezknees Agree. Shows that most don’t understand the benefits system.

EffieeBriest · 11/02/2024 09:27

@Naptrappedmummy but they aren’t usually entitled to anything. That’s the thing.

They’re very usually entitled to universal credit. Most people on UC don’t work.

All.issues that have been made worse due to decisions made by the Conservative government.

What's your point? When splitting up their income would drop so it may mean that they are entitled to UC. I work full time and get UC.

They really don't. These are the actual rules. Required to work a minimum of 30 hours on NMW when your child is 3-12 and a minimum of 35 hours when child is 13+. Doesn't fit their narrative though.

No, these are people who don’t work. They’ve been living off their boyfriend/husband for years and when they split everyone just tells them to apply for UC rather than the blindingly obvious solution which is to get a job.

Like I said, the majority of people on UC do not work at all.

EffieeBriest · 11/02/2024 09:34

@Naptrappedmummy absolute bollocks and deliberate lying.

Naptrappedmummy · 11/02/2024 09:34

Just out of interest how do people prove they spend 30 hours a week job searching?

dsan · 11/02/2024 09:34

@Naptrappedmummy if you are eligible to work (fit, able, have no caring or studying commitments) you are made to work.

I have a friend whose partner upped and left without a word last June. She needed to claim UC while working part time, her employer held a full time position until her youngest would start school in the September, despite explaining this to UC she had to prove (every month? Week?) that she had been looking for full time work. It was annoying but she understood that was the way the system worked, if you are able to you must prove you are spending the equivalent time of full time work looking for full time work.

EffieeBriest · 11/02/2024 09:35

They have to apply for 100s of jobs a week and prove it. Why don’t you stick with your mean spirited belief they are all scroungers.

Yes, they can claim UC but they would still have to then get jobs. I've claimed for 15 years, I know exactly how it works and what the expectations are.

Kendodd · 11/02/2024 09:36

I think it will be in Aug. Theyll time it to make it as hard as possible for students to vote.
