Why does the pocket on a cycling jacket go all the way round the back?

Just that. I wear it for running (it's dh's). I put my gloves in the pocket at the side and they end up at the bottom of the jacket. What gives?

So there’s more space for the stuff you might need on a longer ride.

I’ve always assumed it’s because having side/front pockets full when hunched over cycling is really uncomfortable.

but interested to hear if there is another reason 😊

It's so you can fit loads of stuff in it! Food, spare inner tube etc. Yiuu don't tend to jiggle around on a bike as much as when running so keeping everything in place is easier. Often cycling tops come with the big pocket split into three too. That makes it easier.

So when they are leant over thir handlebars stuff in the pockets doesn't dig into their stomach/chest. They keep things at the back for easy access as well. Watch some road cycling nd you will see it is quite practical for cyclists.

You can put energy gels and nutrition bars in there

@PegasusReturns is spot on. Side pockets will drag down and become uncomfortable (especially if it rains). Back pockets have room for inner tube, mini pump, tyre levers, Tampax, snack, keys, gilet, cash etc - all of which can be needed by me on a 50mile Sunday morning ride.

As others have said, you can fit a lot in the pockets of a good cycling jersey. The most popular arrangement is one big pocket across the back divided into 3 so you have 3 deep but narrowish channels that you can put different stuff into. If for example you're pulling your rain jacket out mid ride you don't want your multi tool and gels flying out so best to be able to separate them. Quite a few of my jerseys also have a small zipped pocket somewhere on them which is handy to put bank cards etc in for extra security but you can carry a lot of stuff in your back pockets in without even noticing it's there.

Ah okay thank you! All makes sense! I think I found it particularly confusing because the pockets on this jacket are not split into three - just one massive pocket that is kind of the whole jacket. I'd put something in the front and find it round the back.

All the stuff you put in them... sounds kind of like the jacket is really more of a wearable bag...

An advert for gilets just came up in the middle of this thread for me. So spooky.
