I booked a house in Spain thru booking com and I got a scam email asking me to pay in 12 hours.
Then I got phone calls from Spain.
I don't trust the entire booking now and I'm worried they havr my details..

Don't make any payments except via booking.com or in person when you arrive.

The scammers have your name & contact info but not your card details. They won't do anything other than try to persuade you to make a payment to them.

Fabulousfeb · 10/02/2024 09:46

Thank you. I'm too nervous to proceed at all now, and I'd like to cancel

Oh, and watch out for them sending you fake links too. booking.com won't send payment links.

The fault is with hotels and rental companies who are careless with their login details, allowing hackers to access their accounts and their client info. If you do fall for it, booking.com will disclaim any responsibility.

Sure, cancelling and booking direct may be the way for maximum peace of mind.

Fabulousfeb · 10/02/2024 17:44

@MrSand

I've cancelled it. I wasn't sure of who was contacting me and who was bonafide etc so I've cancelled and used air b n b but I see their not scam free either.

I used to use a sight called owners direct which was fabulous and direct to owners.

I think Owners Direct is now VRBO. I’ve booked through VRBO and had no problems, I think you pay the owner directly

monpetitlapin · 10/02/2024 17:48

Presumably it was the owner of the accommodation calling you to try to get you to pay them directly to avoid Booking.com's fees. You did the right thing cancelling. Booking used to be a much better place for proper accommodation run by professionals before every random Air BNB-er started listing on there as well. I wish they'd do something about it. If I wanted an Air BNB I'd use Air BNB and I don't for a reason.

We recently got scammed by VRBO. We booked a 3 bed apartment in Ghana for a couple of weeks last month. Paid the money and when we arrived, the property was in the process of being built. Our money was gone, all calls and messages ignored, and we had to find and pay for alternative accommodation. We made alot of noise on Twitter and kept tagging VRBO. Then they suddenly were contacted after a week by VRBO and were able to obtain a refund

I had a recent hotel booking ask me to pay within 24 hours or lose the booking. Even said to enter payment details even if Id already paid....

I contacted the hotel directly who said it wasn't them and they would contact booking.

I didn't pay obviously and my reservation is still on for March 🤷‍♀️

Fabulousfeb · 10/02/2024 18:05

@TadpolesInPool this is what I had 12 hours.

Unfortunately ours is also through a company hulio or hukidy or something so I never had a speficic contact.

I couldn't be sure who was emailing me or calling me.

My new air b and b could still be a con I suppose but I've got one man's name and contact.

Ring Booking. Com
They are so helpful.
We once booked a villa through them and it was nothing like the photos.. we took photos and sent them.. we rang them and they face us all the money back.. and took the villa off their site. ( Owner lived in Russia).
