London must do’s

Hi

So my husband and I have a child free day in London. What are your must do’s? I’m thinking sky garden for breakfast? Maybe National Gallery?

Already done science / natural history / British museums, Churchill war rooms, Tower of London. Not really interested in Buckingham Palace or Madame Tussauds

What day of the week are you going? Depending what you are into:

• Columbia flower markets (Sunday)
• Bricklane markets (Sunday) and can combine with Spitalfields market near Liverpool st which is open 7 days
• Greenwich- Cutty Sark, market, the observatory

Again, depending what you like doing- here is a suggested Sunday itinerary:

• Get out at Liverpool st station. Walk across the rd to explore Spitalfields market. There is a section outside where you can see the ruins and the excavations made when digging it: Digging London - The Spitalfields Market excavations in London - Spitalfields Project
• Keep walking into Bricklane markets and explore the UPmarket and stalls along the road. Multiple curry houses along the street too. The only one I eat in is Preem. DH did a cooking course there and the kitchen was apparently very clean.
• Keep walking north up Bricklane where there are more 2nd hand type stalls to the left along Sclater rd, and lots of vintage clothing shops to the right, along Cheshire st.
• At the end of Bricklane are 2 beigel shops. We've always preferred the 2nd shop (Beigel Bake), closer to the main road. If there is a queue snaking out the door, don't worry, it will move quickly. I love their salt beef beigels which you can get with or without mustard. Their carrot cake is the best I've eaten. Beigel Bake (bricklanebeigel.co.uk)
• Continue north across the main road and head towards Columbia flower markets. Columbia Road Flower Market – Columbia Road Flower Market is a street market in Bethnal Green in London, England. Columbia Road is a road of Victorian shops situated off Hackney Road in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
• After the flower market, another 15mins is the Last Tuesday society. Its a quirky bar which has absinthe and other drinks. Downstairs is a bizarre museum of curiosities. The Viktor Wynd Museum Of Curiosities, Fine Art & Natural History (thelasttuesdaysociety.org)
• Another option nearby is Broadway market and the canal.
• Depending where you end up, you could walk to Cambridge heath or London fields overgrounds or Bethnal Green tube station.

If you fancy a gallery, then consider the Wallace Collection (free) or Leighton House Museum (£14)

I'd start off at Borough Market for breakfast and coffee, walk along Southbank, get a boat to Greenwich, mooch around the market, check out the Maritime Museum and Greenwich Observatory, then go and have a beer at the Trafalgar Tavern. I'd get the bus back into town (because I love the bus and it's a really great way to see a town or a city).

I’d book the Lightroom and go to see the Moonwalkers - an immersive , 1 hour presentation about space travel. I would second a boat to Greenwich and maybe a visit to the Observatory. The Twist Museum in Oxford Street is very good too. It’s full of illusions and they explain the science behind them. If you like art, Tate Britain has a large collection of paintings on free display. I prefer it to Tate Modern.
