Scalp picking - hairdressers tomorrow and I'm embarrassed

I usually make a huge effort to stop before an appointment, I have for this one but I've had a stressful few days at work and have done it without realising 😳

I'm at the hairdressers tomorrow and I have 1 small patch on the side of my head and 1 behind my ear that I've been picking.

Will she be disgusted? Should I say something? I've piled on moisturiser in the hope it'll appear a bit better

I know I need to just not do it - I don't feel anxious, it's just a mindless thing.

Yes say something so they can be more gentle in those areas, perhaps they can suggest a scalp product, are you picking at dry skin?

NorthernGirlie · 09/02/2024 20:04

I think I'd be disgusted if I was the hairdresser having to touch my head 😢

Yes - I do have a dry scalp but it's only bad at the places I choose to irritate it by picking

I have scalp psoriasis so my scalp is dry and scaly. I always let them know and they use gentler or sensitive treatments. I know how you feel, I've never had anyone recoil in horror and refuse to do my hair though.

Caravaggiouch · 09/02/2024 22:23

I have 2 cysts and a patch of psoriasis on my scalp. Have never had a hairdresser recoil in horror yet!

Barleysugar86 · 09/02/2024 22:25

I do this too OP. I think it's probably more common for them to see this than you'd realise. They've always been very tactful and not said anything to me while I'm there, even when I've had a few current scabs I've been picking at.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 09/02/2024 22:29

Don't worry, they're not just people that make your hair look nice, they have expertise in scalp and skin conditions as well 🙂 maybe just mention it to your stylist if you feel self conscious. But I'm sure they've seen it all before.

If it makes you feel better I do this too due to stress/anxiety and have the hairdressers next week, am similarly worried.
I wish I could stop it once and for all.
I try to keep hold of one of those springy hair bands to fiddle with instead which sometimes helps.

NorthernGirlie · 09/02/2024 22:44

I know I couldn't touch someone's scalp if they had a scab... obviously I'm glad people can! My hairdresser is so lovely - o hate to think of her rushing off to wash her hands or cringing for me 😫

Tell her. She is a professional.
It will be fine.
