When did ear buds give way to headphones?

I failed to notice it 😂

I was in the gym, struggling as always with my ear buds (tiny ears, need really loud music too) when I noticed the girl next to me had traditional style headphones on.

Looking round the gym, headphones outnumbered earbuds by two to one, and it's the same in the street, on the bus etc.

I bought some headphones and they are HEAVENLY. In fact my workout was twenty minutes longer because the tunes kept me going.

I'm behind the curve obviously - when did headphones take over?

2021 I’d say. Apple releases the AirPod max for £500 which are unaffordable for most but revived headphones over ear pods.

MorrisZapp · 10/02/2024 00:03

Yip my headphones cost thirty quid in TK Maxx! Apple can hop it.

I must have funny shaped ears as I've always hated airpods as they hurt my ears and fall out.

I got some really nice noise cancelling headphones 2 years ago & wear them all the time & I'd say most people (apart from school kids) wear headphones rather than airpods now.

I think when everyone realised that earbuds just fall out and get lost and so are pointless. The sound is crap too

Tide started turning about 2/3 years ago?

FabFebHalfTerm · 10/02/2024 00:33

Oh that's good

I need to find some as my ears are too small to wear buds.

i mentioned it the other night and the teens🤪🤪🤪

Spartacular · 10/02/2024 00:33

I've only ever used headphones.

justasking111 · 10/02/2024 00:36

Mine fall out and the puppy chews them. But I can't wear headphones in bed because I fall asleep turn over and the phone crashes to the floor waking me up.

galliverstravels · 10/02/2024 00:37

I only use my AirPods to sleep really, always too worried about losing them if I wear them out and about. They were a present so I didn't spend a fortune just to wear them in the house- before anyone jumps on me. I like them to listen to podcasts as I fall asleep as they're comfier than headphones for that (I'm a side sleeper) but for anything else I like ANC's

Bluetooth headphones might help this

youhavenoshameonyourface · 10/02/2024 00:39

pretty much all headphones are bluetooth now

MissRheingold · 10/02/2024 00:53

I've seen a couple of women pushing a pram and a pushchair wearing these type of headphones.

Both completely in a world of their own and one stepped into a road, completely oblivious at a ca coming around the corner and beeping at her! It was near miss.

The other one had a pram and was making zero contact with her baby just a dumb expression on her face as she was tuned out listening to whatever she was listening to.

Nah, it was way before then. Beats were the first “modern day” cool, over-ear headphones that started to gain popularity.

Personally I’m all about the earbuds. Easier to wear, easier to carry, don’t make you look like an idiot 🤣

AncientSkaterGirl · 10/02/2024 08:16

I love the look of headphones but can't stand thr feel of stuff on my head so it is my airpod dupes all the way for me (they don't fall out, fit perfect) I also can't stand those earbuds with the long bit that goes in your ear, flat ones all the way.

BobnLen · 10/02/2024 08:22

I wear headphones when doing housework as I don't want to drop my AirPods down the toilet or in the sink.

narkyspirit · 10/02/2024 08:28

I use noise cancelling ones in the gym because the music in the gym is so awful and loud, own happy world

I mean stepping out unaware of your surroundings isn't good.

But I wasn't aware I was supposed to be engaging constantly with my baby while she's in the pram? Why is this necessary? In fact, I actively avoid making eye contact and engaging with mine sometimes so that she watches her surroundings and nods off Grin

I’m not following that logic, as Apple AirPods for £120ish still continue to be available and you can use other branded bluetooth ear pods.

Didn't you get the memo while giving birth - you're not allowed your own thoughts or interests now that you are a mother 😂

ExpressCheckout · 10/02/2024 08:42

I use both. Headphones with built in microphone for work calls, ear buds when I am out and about. Mine are both £40 quid ones, had for ages, they're fine.

Apple ear buds are terrible for the person sitting next to someone wearing them, they leak a lot of sound. And they look cheap. Proper ear buds don't leak sound.

Twitchie · 10/02/2024 08:43

Some people don't want to use 'unbranded' air pods (any that isn't Apple). I find it weird, but yes, people do think like this. So if they lose a pair and they don't want to pay for the fourth replacement set...

Headphones are definitely better. Don't get lost, better sound quality.

I personally wouldn't want to wear it because it clashes with my clothing style. Want something more discreet and black to blend in with hair.

Fabricwitch · 10/02/2024 08:44

I'm obsessed with fashion but never thought to base my listening device choices on what's fashionable! I usually use wired earbuds as the sound is decent, they're small, and don't need charging. Anything Bluetooth I forgot to charge and the sound quality isn't as good. I prefer my over ear headphones for travel as they are comfier and the sound is better, but they are too big for me to carry around every day.

Hiddenmnetter · 10/02/2024 08:45

Different headphones for different occasions really- I use my sleepbuds at night (although my wife recently got the Kokoon sleepbuds and I’m v jealous). During the day I use AirPods, but they won’t stay in your ears if you’re running or any sort of impact exercise, so use headphones for that. I also use noise cancelling headphones if I’m ever on a plane because the silence is golden. DW and I take it in turns who gets the noise cancelling and who gets the kids 😬

What does this have to do with anything…..

StoatofDisarray · 10/02/2024 08:49

I've noticed this at work (university): all the students seem to wear them.

Could someone recommend some headphones to me? I listen to a wide range of music as well as a lot of podcasts so they have to have a good range but I don't want to pay AirPod prices!

MilitantMommyBFArmy4Life · 10/02/2024 08:51

It's judgemental none sense. Even when you're simply taking a walk, you have to be cooing and singing non stop to impress strangers. Don't you dare make dumb faces (whatever that is).

Then again, the woman walking in the road proves the noise cancelling is fantastic. I'll take three!
