What should I do now for a job?

Had to leave the finance industry due to pending criminal conviction , what can i do now?

  1. joined a grad scheme at an accountancy big 4 for 6 months
  2. resigned bc I got charged with a crime, will likely receive a fine ( it was common assault, on a drunk night out) so I am unlikely be fit and proper enough for a regulated industry like accounting, finance, law etc. or work with vulnerable people like children/old people
  3. all my previous experience was in finance/tutoring/sales
  4. am thinking about retraining into a data scientist
  5. BSc Economics if that helps

I'm not sure why you resigned so quickly. Did work / your union tell you to do so? If you end up with it coming to nothing then you've ended up with no job for nothing.
I think data analyst or sales/marketing is probably your best bet.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/02/2024 18:35

Management consulting? You could get into that grad scheme.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/02/2024 18:35

Estate agent or any other kind of sales or recruitment

Eventually it will be filtered out so a job like working with children will be possible (I had a caution for common assault with threats to kill back in 2008 and now can work with children) it takes a while though unfortunately

Depends who you know really. I worked with a man who’d been given a job at our firm (accountancy but starting a legal side), he’d been given a conviction for assault too. After less than 6 months there he corned me and roughly got me to sign or send a document using my mouse (for some reason he couldn’t do it himself but he could if that makes sense) and made threatening comments to me). Then when we had licences for legal software he ensured he had the one I also needed for work as legal sec. I resigned not long afterwards but not just because of him.

You’ll get work though. Disgusting behaviour though from you OP.

You get nasty idiots as estate agents (worked with them when working as legal sec) so OP sounds like she’ll fit right in.

I’ve been drunk in the past but never assaulted someone and if I did a fine is the least I’d expect, especially if it could affect my future career.

I still can’t quite believe people are minimising what OP has done or even as in @Reallyawfulcoffee‘s case seeming proud of their actions.

Creu · 09/02/2024 18:54

What interests you? Would data science be something you could be passionate about?

Ponderingwindow · 09/02/2024 19:04

Data science jobs often require the ability to pass incredibly rigorous background checks. You are granted access to all sorts of data. If you can’t work in finance, I doubt it is the career for you.

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 09/02/2024 19:11

Did you talk to your employers when you resigned? If they liked you I'd expect them to have some alternative suggestions for how to proceed.

Common assault can cover some pretty minor though unpleasant bad behaviour, so I personally would keep an open mind about you.

I have not said I’m proud of a caution - equally you don’t know the circumstances of my caution. I’m proud that I’m now able to work again though that’s where my pride is

Ok sure… I guess I’m slightly biased because of my experience but in my case that leopard definitely didn’t change his spots and was only employed by my then employers as his friend worked there as an accountants and said give him a chance. He assaulted someone on a night out and seems the respectable man but obviously a misogynist.

It just seemed to me, that you, just seemed to think it’s fine to work with children, after a common assault with threats to kill (though I don’t know the circumstances) and you seem fine about it now. But life is life, I’ve had red mist once or twice in my life.

It does sound bad absolutely. I don’t want to hijack OP thread but I’ll explain. I was in an abusive relationship where I was physically, emotionally and financially abused for years by my then DP. One day I snapped and fought back trying to get him off me and my acrylic nails caught him in the eye and across his face, he called the police on me and as they arrested me I said to him that I’d kill him if he did anything to dd she was a baby and they were leaving him with her and taking his side. I begged to go home and kept asking what was the quickest way to be let out and was told to accept a caution - which I did and then had to go straight back to get dd (luckily he had got his mum round to look after her and had gone out drinking - I moved my stuff out and went to live with my mum that night)

themusingsofaninsomniac · 09/02/2024 20:28

What exactly happened? There are varying levels of this.. if it's not at the extreme end I'd be open during my applications

HotToes · 09/02/2024 20:33

Retail

You need a clear DBS for that as quite a lot of contracts are with the public sector.

if you are good with numbers I would suggest some thing in analytics, data science, coding, project management etc etc. but the really well paying jobs are in the finance and government sector.

Well now you say that and explain you were justified in your attack.

The man I knew just apparently got into a fight but he assaulted the man on a night out. And I think he was in legal training then. He wasn’t that young either. We welcomed into our firm, even I thought oh ok so he’s assaulted a man but if his friend thinks he’s ok to work here, he must be. Like I said, he turned out to be a violent twat who’s still working there and passed his solicitors exams. Strangely enough a young female lawyer who started there left too, maybe she was treated by him the same way I was. And I think it’s disgusting what he did to me. We were the first alternative business structure (eg where you can combine legal and accountancy so this was partly why he was employed, as we wanted new staff but a few lawyers wouldn’t touch us due to the ABS status.

Does the DBS work if OP lies though? Can you do that on them? I’ve had a few done but can’t recall if you have to tell them of your convictions or not.

Newname000 · 11/02/2024 23:36

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain
A DBS is done to check what your convictions are. It doesn't matter if you lie because, depending on the type of check, it will tell your employer of any relevant convictions. They are

  • a basic check, which shows unspent convictions and conditional cautions
  • a standard check, which shows any spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings
  • an enhanced check, which shows the same as a standard check plus any information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role
  • an enhanced check with barred lists, which shows the same as an enhanced check plus whether you’re on the list of people barred from doing the role (I have this one)
