Car accident - at-fault party asked to settle privately.

Car insurance - I got hit yesterday, I’m fine, was stationary, but my car needs a new bumper.

The guy who hit me was really sorry and I have no hard feelings to him at all, it was an accident and he pulled over straight away.

We’ve both notified our insurance, his provider has contacted me to say he takes full responsibility and given me some options for repairs.

The guy who hit me has asked if he can settle it privately with me. I have no problem with this in principle, the damage really isn’t severe and I don’t need anything for personal injury.

Can we sort this privately, can I decline help from his insurance company? Does he pay an excess for any repairs? The damage to my car might be less than the excess.

I know I probably sound unintelligent but luckily this is my first ever accident in 20-odd years of being a driver. Please explain it to me like you would to a child! Thanks in advance.

Someone clipped my car in a car park at work, it was witnessed and on cctv. They wanted to settle privately. I got a quote, they said it was too much & offered me less so I went to the insurance company. The other driver then asked me to lie & say she was driving a different car!
my quote was £450, actual bill to her insurance company in the end was over £6000.

just go through the insurance, it is much safer. Yes your premiums will go up but as you have already told them they will go up anyway.

I've been Bumped by school kids both times the parents paid very quickly. I did it because they were kids and the parents were lovely.

We had this just before Christmas. We got a quote and asked him for the money, but, the chap said, no, he would pay the invoice once the work was done. So, he wanted us to run up a bill on his behalf, and we would have no way of ensuring that he would pay. I don’t think so!

In the end, his insurance company gave us the money we had been quoted, and an extra £400 to use their services, as opposed to using our own insurer.

They paid the money straight away, and we still haven’t had the work done, as it’s just cosmetic damage (I’ve since had a service and MOT, so I know the car is fine).
