What's the general fine for going through a red light?

Funkyslippers · 09/02/2024 08:10

I very stupidly jumped a red light apparently (didn't even realise I'd done it do might contest it). What fine can I expect? Points on licence too I assume. Thanks in advance

Unfortunately I don't think you can contest because you didn't realise .

Its generally 3 points if there is a camera but a lot don't have cameras and 100 pounds

Morecatsarebetter · 09/02/2024 08:47

Not all red lights have cameras. If you’ve been caught it’s £100 and three points or a red light awareness course

ColdButSunny · 09/02/2024 08:48

You will probably get away with it as there aren't usually cameras on traffic lights. But if you do get caught I think it's £100 plus three points.

I've definitely been caught! Got the letter yesterday but just have to admit it's me

Glad you asked OP. I did the same at 0530am, and now waiting for the notification.
If possible, I'll opt for the course rather than taking points.

MustBeNapTime · 09/02/2024 09:12

With some forces (I don't know if it's the same across the country) you can contest it and ask to see the photo if you think it's an error. But to be honest, if you know you were there at the time, it's likely you did commit the offence as the cameras are only triggered after the light has turned red. But they may have been faulty. It's unlikely with the modern ones but not unheard of. If you honestly think you didn't go through on red, do ask.

CreateHope · 09/02/2024 09:14

If you say you didn’t know you did it then they should charge you with driving without due care 🙄

MoreLidlThanWaitrose · 09/02/2024 09:14

DH did this years ago (accidentally) and just had to go on a speed awareness course.

lioneggs · 09/02/2024 09:15

There was a camera going of constantly the other day, I thought maybe it had new batteries and was just catching everyone but it was flashing every second even when there were no cars so they can be faulty... so many people will be getting letters now it's really bad!

You're not in Bristol are you 🤣

Babyroobs · 09/02/2024 09:16

I had one recently. I opted to do the awareness course to avoid points. Think I still had to pay £90 as well as do the course.

Morecatsarebetter · 09/02/2024 09:17

What you paid was the fee for the course

whatdoidonowffs · 09/02/2024 10:06

Depends on how long the light was on red for wether you get offered a course or not if not then 3 points & £100

caringcarer · 09/02/2024 10:32

I did this about 20 years ago. At the time I got 3 points and I think a £60 fine. I haven't done it again.

Can you do that for going through a red light?

OP posts:
greengreengrass25 · 09/02/2024 10:44

Yes

DS had this issue

I see people purposely going through red lights everyday.

idontlikealdi · 09/02/2024 10:46

Why would you do a speed course for jumping a red light?

Its £100 and 3 points

Floralnomad · 09/02/2024 10:49

You definitely can get a course instead of a fine , it’s a Driver Awareness course but depends what your driving record is like

It’s a red light awareness course, not speed. Two separate things and two different courses

lioneggs · 10/02/2024 18:23

@Funkyslippers no way! It was on falcondale road. Not sure on the exact day but I think it was last Wednesday, the 31st Jan. Hope you can sort it!

Old post I know , but I’ve just received a letter fur jumping a red light , did you have to notify your insurance Company if you done the course?

whatdoidonowffs · 21/02/2025 17:10

No only if you got points

Apparently some insurers do say you need to tell them. Check the wording of yours
