Biden and the report

BBC News - 'My memory is fine' - Biden hits back at special counsel
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68244352

I'm guessing this is exaggerated for election fodder (particularly the bit about his sons death) as Robert Hur is a Republican, although I've no doubt Biden is struggling.

What is this thing about US politicians having to pretend they're healthy?

I can't fathom how Biden and Trump are the only options in a country with such a large population.

Biden speaking at the White House

'My memory is fine' - Biden hits back at special counsel

The president rejects findings he disclosed classified material and denies he forgot when his son died.

I think this is the big mystery to all of us outside the US (and probably many within the US as well). It's all to do with having enough money to run an effective election campaign apparently.

I would love to hear from some American Mumsnetters on this subject, to really have a greater understanding of how the election later this year could possibly have come to this.

Spectre8 · 09/02/2024 07:43

It's been known for ages his memory has been fading. It's just more obvious now!

Funny how one president (former) has the book thrown at him and indicted but this one is swept under the carpet and nothing is done. Even Hillary suffered consequences when she had files on her computer.

Just goes to show there is something going on

KenAdams · 09/02/2024 07:53

I'm guessing because he's a sitting president and they don't want to set a precedence for that?

I agree being reselected for both of them is partly due to being able to raise the OBSCENE amounts of money they need to achieve the necessary coverage and name recognition. The US is massive - 40 times bigger than the UK huge urban and rural populations. The parties can't afford to pick someone less known and have to spend a fortune just getting their name recognition up.

FrannieSaid · 09/02/2024 13:29

Biden reported the docs he found, returned them promptly, and sat for hours of interviews, while dealing with the Hamas attack.

Trump lied about having documents, SHOWED THEM TO MAR A LAGO RANDOMS, and tried to retroactively declare them "declassified" which "he did in his mind". He's under indictment for all of that now.

There's no comparison. The report - which clearly states there is no grounds for prosecution, deviated into completely unprofessional and unnecessary editorial comment by the Republican Special Prosecutor. There was nothing there, so they resorted to cheap, politically motivated jibes, disgracing their office.

The Trump family ALL said "I don't recall" dozens and dozens of times during their depositions... where's the outrage about that? 😏Trump's attorneys DESPERATELY try to keep him from testifying - or even appearing in court, because he's so unhinged, and starts blustering about what a victim he is.

Biden's FINE. He was exactly the right man for the moment because of his vast political experience, relationships with world leaders, and character. He pulled off the impossible, and got the country back on course, and despite dealing with the worst fucking Republicans Congress has ever seen, has passed some of the most progressive legislation since FDR.

Y'all need to lay off the Daily Mail, it's not a good look.

Lizzieregina · 09/02/2024 13:37

Well said @FrannieSaid!

And yes it’s all due to “electability” and finances. There are some potentially great candidates but it’s widely believed that some “beginner” Democrat wouldn’t be able to beat Trump due to name recognition issues.

I don’t know what kind of hold Trump has over republicans other than he must have dirt on them because some of them have done an extreme about face and I can only think he knows something they don’t want the world to know. When Republicans do oppose him, he throws large sums of money to their opponents and gets them defeated in elections. Example Liz Cheney, possibly the only Republican left with any integrity. I was kind of hoping she’d run as a third party candidate but I’d also be afraid she’d take votes away from Biden.

lol Biden is fine, he's far from fine. He's senile for one, he's an embarrassment throughout the world. He believes he spoke to Mitterrand from Germany recently, 1) he was the French president, 2) he died in 1996. His weakness has allowed the conflicts that have happened in Ukraine & Israel. Biden is v.unpopular & has the worst approval ratings in history.

The only reason the 25th amendment hasn't been done is due to cackling Kamala who's even worse than Biden. The democrats want to oust him & replace him with either Gavin Newsome or Michelle Obama. I will be amazed if biden on the ticket in November!

Spectre8 · 09/02/2024 14:10

Ahahahahahahaj Biden is fine!!!! Omg what a joke he isn't fine!

He he forgets things he coukd of rogt he had documents there.

This si the hypocrisy we csn now see so clearly.

He wasn't even fine when he was campaigning the first time. All swept under the carpet. You can find the videos out there though.

FrannieSaid · 09/02/2024 14:27

And here they are - the brigade of coordinated nonsense, right on schedule.

Y'all are just DYING for Michelle Obama - who's said endlessly she will never run - so you can pull out the racist and misogyny cards. Sorry.

Also - we're saving Newsome for 2028.

Garlicdoughball · 09/02/2024 14:32

It would be good to have a few more US presidents that weren’t media figures or related to a previous one.

GasPanic · 09/02/2024 15:13

Is it now too late to remove Biden as the democrat nominee ?

I think they are in real trouble if they go with him. How he is going to fare in the high pressure race to the White House, along with things like presidential debates with Trump ? I just don't think he has the stamina, either mental or physical for it.

I just think it is madness he was allowed to run again.

As opposed to the cakewalk that is leading the free world?

LMAO

Tracker1234 · 09/02/2024 15:27

Frannie - do you honestly beleive Biden is fine?? Really.... He is talking of dead political leaders as though they are still here, he shakes hands with invisible friends, he seems to lose his thread more and more.

God help him if he tries to get into debates with his opposition.

AND THIS IS THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD!!

He quite frankly looks like he has stepped out of a care home wondering where he is (and who he is!)

You cannot say he is fine. People are now laughing at him. The Telegraph opinion poll has 93% of people voting that he is senile and not capable. Where are his family in all of this?

Vicliz24 · 09/02/2024 15:36

I find it completely ridiculous that in the whole of the USA with its vast political system the choice is between a man who surely needs assisted living and Donald Trump .

Agree.

You could probably pull a random person from the street and they’d be more competent than either of those two.

Mind you, we don’t have a great choice in the UK at the moment either

GasPanic · 09/02/2024 15:46

FrannieSaid · 09/02/2024 15:20

LMAO

But how much work does he actually do leading the free world ?

For all you know he could do sweet FA and it is all mostly done by his advisors.

He's just wheeled out to press conferences when forced to (most of which seem to be car crashes) and get on plane for trips (literally).

I actually do think leading the free world is a "cakewalk" compared to a presidential campaign, because there he has to be present and he has to speak day in day out to rallies and reporters. And he has to travel round the US from State to State on a daily basis. And he has to actually participate in cut and thrust debate. For literally months. And at the same time lead the free world.

I think the presidential campaign is probably the most exhausting thing a president does.

queenofarles · 09/02/2024 15:51

I really hope that’s case, I really do , I’m not being sarcastic, it’s actually worrying ,
have you seen the other (R) and( D) candidates?
Trump is still a better choice than all of them.

StillSmallVoice · 09/02/2024 16:10

@FrannieSaid I couldn't agree more. Biden has done a good job in many many ways, but isn't getting any credit for it.

I am astonished that so many Americans have fallen for the unhinged craziness of the extreme MAGA republicans. Having failed to find anything to charge Biden with, they are setting up this false narrative that Biden is mentally unfit, and they will repeat it endlessly until the election and that people believe it to be true.

Sort of like the last election being stolen from Trump.

Unfortunately, thing which happen in the States can affect other countries which can't do anything about it.

Pleasebeafleabite · 09/02/2024 16:10

The BBC are reporting that Biden inadvertently referred to Egyptian leader Abdul Fattah al-Sisi as the "president of Mexico" in his latest briefing.

You mistakenly think when we say Biden is terrible, that we might think Trump is good. The point is we think they are both terrible and struggle to understand how either could be chosen to stand.

Despite your support for Biden, you seem to think it acceptable that he took classified documents home just because he didn’t treat them as badly as Trump? Trump saying ‘I don’t recall’ doesn’t mean Biden being unable to remember straightforward facts (like Mexico does not border Gaza) is not an issue.

There was a joke, that when a previous president visited a nursing home he asked as resident ‘do you know who I am’ and the resident replied ‘if you can’t remember you better ask the matron’. Obvious the joke was the president knew who he was. For Biden we are getting too close to that being reality for someone with the power he has.

SaffronSpice · 09/02/2024 16:24

On the other hand Trump is a circus and has some media savvy. He has successfully turned the court cases against him into a plus point for his campaign with support seeming to increase with each prosecution served on him. He has got masses of coverage from them. For him to win, the democrats just need to support more actions against him. If he got sent to jail there would probably be a landslide.

FrannieSaid · 09/02/2024 16:58

A lot of y'all ought to get your "news" somewhere other than TikTok.

lol you ought to stop watching fake news cnn, msdnc etc. They are literally brainwashing you, face the facts dementia joe is a national disgrace. Biden is the one who should have been charged for the classified documents as he was only a senator & VP.

Only a president is able to declassify documents hence why Trump has done nothing wrong, it's all election interference. All these indictments are all BS, when Trump gets "convicted" and I use that term loosely he willl become a martyr & become more popular & will win even more so in November. Democrats always overplay their hand & have done with Trump massively, they all have TDS just like you have. Also I guarantee Trump won't spend one night in jail.
