How do I stop the pestering from Smart Meter pushers?

I get constant texts, emails, and phone calls. It's been years now. The text and emails sent don't have a reply function so you can't answer NO, let alone fuck off, and I've already asked the AI people who phone not to phone again, but they keep on phoning.

Yes, I have Googled. I can't find anything where it says how to stop the harassment.

I emailed Eon and asked them to stop. They replied and agreed to stop them.

British Gas is the same, I contacted their customer service on twitter via dm and provided my details and told them I didn't want one, nor did I want them to keep pestering me or arranging appointments to come fit one without me asking or agreeing.

I still don't get how that's allowed and it annoys me more than the emails and texts that just were offering one as I have had to cancel an appt I didn't make twice!

Stupidly it seems to need doing every year as I've had to do it three times that I can remember.

@HashtagShitShop It's insane that you can't seem to just opt out of the shitshow forever. How does 'Smart Meters' even have my details to contact when I've not given permission to give them my data? Argh.

I don't get anything. I used to get some emails from my energy supplier, until I emailed to say I did not wish for nor consent to such communication. Have you tried complaining to your energy supplier? Unless they're totally shots in the dark, the communication must be linked to yours or they wouldn't know you don't have one already.

MariaLuna · 09/02/2024 00:54

Sorry you are being harassed.

I have a smart meter and I find it great to keep track of my usage per month.

Gone from 300 - fuck you Putin - to 21 a month.

Thanks I didn't realise it was originating from my energy supplier, I'll try them next.

Incessant follow us here too, hate the phrase, but it boils my piss.

God I have this too. EDF. I complained. Mumbled stuff about data protection. They promised to stop. No more texts. Now they bombard me with emails. Googled it - you don't have to have one - unless your current one is ineffective or something. Don't know why it annoys me so much

I just check my meter and send readings on the 1st. It takes about two minutes and I am billed accurately.

The problem is, we probably cannot even threaten to move to another supplier, who would probably insist on a smart meter for joining them, or at least make it extremely difficult not to have one. The letters I've had from Eon have been saying "it is a legal requirement to have a smart meter" - bullshit. I ignored them, and it went quiet for a bit. I content myself with being the group that will not be swayed by their "persuasiveness", so that it shows on their statistics.

The prefix "smart" does not bode well. See also "smart motorways", which have not gone down well in some places.
