I haven’t used the tumble dryer once this winter

I’m wondering if it’s time to get rid of it. I used to use it maybe once a week for school uniforms or when it rained all weekend. Now it’s just me and one teenager at home who has left school so I think I can manage with radiators and a clothes airer. It seems such a luxury energy and cost-wise too and my bills have gone up this year.

I know plenty of people survive without a tumble dryer but wondered if you used to use one and gave it up.

We are a family of five and don't have a tumble dryer. I've never had one actually! It's a pain for bedsheets and towels in the winter obviously, but we've got a dehumidifier and just stick that next to the laundry, it works fine.

I'm 64 and I got my first-ever tumble dryer last year. Too right I use it - but only once or twice a week, sometimes not even that.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/02/2024 20:18

@skybluekitty how long does it take to dry bedding that way? I was wondering about trying to do this

Pancakedayisthebest · 08/02/2024 20:20

I couldn't be without mine but it's a heatpump one and I worked out it was cheaper to run it than it was to use our heated airer or a dehumidifier.

BombaySamphire · 08/02/2024 20:21

Don’t you get damp drying clothes on radiators?

Greensleevevssnotnose · 08/02/2024 20:22

We have one load of washing a week so it costs 50p wouldn't be without it.

minipie · 08/02/2024 20:26

We never had one until we had two very messy small DC and the laundry exploded. I can see that once they are grown I won’t need it as much and could get rid. Actually a lot of DH and my washing is non tumble dry anyway.

It would be very boring going back to hanging out all the socks and pants though…

Just ordered a replacement today. Gone for a heat pump condenser dryer this time.

It's been a month since my old one broke and it's been bloody awful. Also we have a lot of wallpaper around the house so hanging wet washing on radiators isn't great, apart from the fully tiled bathroom where the radiator/towel rail as done some serious heavy lifting.

I'd happily ditch the dishwasher though. Honestly can't remember when I last used it.

Bittersweet25 · 08/02/2024 22:07

I definitely couldn’t live without a dishwasher!

I don’t like wet washing draped around the house but I usually put it on an airer for a day or so then put it on the radiator. Looks untidy though.

I love mine. Saves a lot on ironing. Family of 3. Teenager lots joggers etc that changes a lot. I don't have a dishwasher though so its my luxury. I may move next year and not have room for a dryer so enjoying it whilst I can.

Dilbertian · 09/02/2024 01:19

We've got a washer-dryer, which is perfect as we virtually never use the dryer - but when we need it we need it. It is mostly used for drying down garments and waterproofing technical clothing. If we didn't use such clothes we probably wouldn't bother with a dryer.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 09/02/2024 02:16

I've got a heat pump dryer, used pretty much daily yet my bills are very reasonable. They'd have to prize it out of my cold, dead hands. 🤣🤣🤣

bananasstink · 09/02/2024 02:50

We are a family of 5 with older teens and never had one. I just use the radiators and aiders and change beds regularly. Still manage to get it all done. I would like not to have washing drying in the dining room but we don't have damp and it's not a big inconvenience.

StevieRay · 09/02/2024 03:05

We have a washer/dryer but the drying function wasn't cutting it so we got a separate tumble dryer last week and it's been on twice a day, every day since. We're a family of 4 (2 very messy toddlers) and couldn't do without it.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 09/02/2024 03:59

We use ours several times a week between 3 of us. In summer I dry some things on a folding clothes horse outside the kitchen door.
