A basic question about electric car chargers

We don't yet have an electric car, but might get one in the next few years. We live in a semi-detached house, with a paved drive at the front with space for 2-3 cars. If we get a charger fitted, will it just be on the wall of the house or do they need to dig it into the ground?

I'm asking because we'll soon be getting our driveway re-landscaped so I'm wondering if we should plan ahead and install a charger at the same time.

Ours is just in the wall, they didn’t dig anywhere

we ran a wire from the fuse box to the charger

You can have it on the wall of the house (easiest) or on a post if you don’t park near the house. If it’s on a post away from the house they will have to dig a trench and it will be a lot more expensive. The charging cable is pretty long and when not in use you just coil it round the charger.

If you think you'll need the charger mounted somewhere other than the wall of the house get the people landscaping the drive to put some ducts in from the house to where you think you'll want the charger.

It depends where your meter is, where your fuse box and where you want the charger. We needed the cable dug into the ground because our garage is detached and 90 degrees to the house. If you wouldn't have to cross over your drive to get from your meter/fuse box to the charger, you'll be fine.
