I just saw on the News Ian Lavender - Private Pike in Dads army has died aged 77. He was the last surviving member of the cast. This comedy series has really stood the test of time.

"Don't tell him, Pike!"

RIP Ian x x

Oh that's sad. Dad's army was a key memory of my childhood!

There's so much tv these days I don't think there will be the same collective memory of experiencing programs like this.

Clothespegsandplasticbags · 05/02/2024 12:58

77 isn't very old. I used to warch Dad's Army with my mum. She loved it. Great characters and laugh out loud moments.

GettingBetter2024 · 05/02/2024 13:02

I've only just realised I must have been watching reruns as it finished before I was born!!!!

But I have memories in the 80s of it being on. I guess we must have watched rerun series quite happily 10 years later then!?

Dad's Army still makes me laugh. I feel like I've grown up with it. I love that Ian was in the 2016 film

Ian Lavender as Frank Pike

There was some great episodes. Would be hard to choose a favourite one. The lighthouse one was good also the Catherine wheel controlled by Pikes radio set. And the famous dont tell him Pike episode. And some great supporting cast members too. The Verger and Captain Square. But they were all excellent.

I think it's running on UK Gold at the moment. I remember watching the original series, as a young child. I have seen all the episodes multiple times and still laugh out loud. The "Don't tell him Pike" one must rate as one of the greatest comedy moments of all time 🤣🤣
Rest in peace Pike and thankyou for decades of laughter 😍

Teenage DS loved Dad's Army when he was younger. Favourite Christmas present was the Dad's Army boxset, had Dad's Army themed birthday cake and took friends to the cinema for the new Dad's Army film that came out a few years ago.

RIP Ian

Got the all on DVD and often take out a disc for a viewing.
Also have the radio episodes which are great fun. These were made and broadcast at the same time as the TV show but are subtly different (to suit radio audiences) so not just like listening to the DVD with no picture.

A real timeless classic with some great actors.

Such sad news. I'm a huge fan I watched it with my brothers and sisters. Now with my children - we all love it.
Thanks for making us laugh Ian. RIP.

Andthereyougo · 05/02/2024 18:37

He was a customer of my parents during and after Dad’s Army. Really nice man, very polite and quietly spoken. RIP Ian.

NewName24 · 05/02/2024 18:38

RiP Ian.
Thanks for all the laughter over the years.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/02/2024 18:40

Don't tell 'em Pike really is a part of TV history

Elderflower14 · 05/02/2024 19:09

I started a thread earlier too. I was saying on there that the episode where Pike shoots the Vicar, Verger and the Air Raid Warden with a pretend gun made me laugh so much that I had an asthma attack.
Ds2 is a huge DA fan and is very sad...

winewolfhowls · 05/02/2024 19:11

Fond memories of watching this with grandparents. RIP.

Gutted. I have had a tricky week with health anxiety and DA has got me through. Feels very sad that they are all gone now.

Loved Ian in Yes Minister too.

DriftingDora · 05/02/2024 20:38

I used to watch it with my parents. So much fun and laughter at their antics. Bless you, sleep well, Ian.

MatchingBedding · 05/02/2024 20:41

Love him as pike! He has just done the nativity on classic eastenders as Derrick, Pauline’s best friend. He’s lovely in that too. Sad news.

Violinist64 · 05/02/2024 20:50

I watched this as a child. The very first episode I saw, on its very first showing , was the most classic of the lot - the German U Boat with the famous “don’t tell him, Pike” line. The next day in the playground at school, children were singing Pike’s version of Whistle While You Work. Little did we know, as eight year olds, that we would still be laughing at it over fifty years later and countless generations would discover it.

LlynTegid · 05/02/2024 20:53

@Elderflower14 thank you.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 05/02/2024 21:05

This one made me smile
