Tablets to delay period advice

Universalsnail · 05/02/2024 09:58

I ordered some Norethisterone because my anniversary is at the weekend and we had arranged to go away for a romantic weekend. But my periods are super heavy and my prediction app says I would be heavy bleeding on our anniversary.

Was due to start the tablets today. I've woke up spotting.

Do I take the tablets anyway and hope it stops my bleeding or do I just not take them and hope this is my period starting early and that the worst of my period will be over by Saturday?

I don't know what to do and I just want to cry as we've saved for this for ages and booked it before my prediction app predicted period this weekend 😭

This is the first time we've been able to go away for a weekend without the kids in 10 years

What does the leaflet say?

I hope it gets sorted, but even if not you can still enjoy the weekend away regardless.

They didn't put one in the box. The label on the box says to take three days before the period. Online says to take four days before the due period. Anecdotal accounts seem to say it can stop your period if you start early.

I will nip in the pharmacist later and see if they have an idea but was meant to start taking them this morning so not sure really.

I have extremely heavy and painful periods so it will unfortunately put a real dampner on things. If it's a heavy day I won't be able to leave the hotel so it's not ideal, although obviously can still go x

I have used these before and honestly wouldn’t recommend starting them now that you’re already spotting. It will more than likely just drag it out and make it worse in my experience! X

Oh op this is rubbish. I have the same issues and just had my period put a real downer on lovely spa stay. I haven't tried these tablets but wanted to ask for future periods if you had tried tranexamic acid?

Start them today and continue the course. I have experienced this before and norethisterone isn't just to stop periods from starting, it's given to people who have been bleeding for a long time and want it to stop. So don't worry, take the medication and have an amazing time away xx

No I haven't. I will have a look into that. 🙂 I got Norethisterone just because I googled meds to delay periods. Never tried to delay or stop before but we've spent alot and it's been a decade since being able to go away for a weekend together so thought it was worth a try. 🙂

It won't stop them. But it does reduce the flow and pain a bit. Not to nothing on the pain front! But it has helped me be able to do stuff on my period.

Sidge · 05/02/2024 17:48

Norethisterone will stop you bleeding whilst you’re taking them, but you will potentially bleed (and more heavily) when you stop taking them.

So either have your natural period now and hope it’s finished by the weekend, or take the norethisterone but make sure you’ve got enough to take 3 a day for a whole week!

Also, don't want to be bearer of bad news, but when I took it I had raging PMT the whole time. Was v bloated and angry. Am sure DH loved it!!!

Universalsnail · 06/02/2024 07:48

Well the spotting stopped so I decided to take them this morning as, to be honest, if the spotting has stopped, then knowing my cycle, I will probably come on sometime over the next three days, which means definite heavy bleeding on Saturday 😩 so I guess fingers crossed they work or make it less. I do feel periody, though, so I don't know if that was the right decision or so.
Oh what I would give to have light periods that don't make me really sick every month 😩

Have you considered something like the coil or the pill (mini or combined) to help with them? I have the implant and have not periods at all

BarrelOfOtters · 06/02/2024 08:16

If you haven’t been to GP about it do, and don’t stop nagging till they help you. It’s not normal to not be able to leave the house and you might be anaemic.

and yeah, noristherone turned me into a raging PMT nightmare. Transameix acid was better. a high dose of ibuprofen works ….but not on an empty stomach and not frequently, just as an emergency.

I have tried pretty much every method of normal contraception. Nothing helped. The implant and coil and marina all gave me constant bleeding. The combined pill made me suicidal.

I am under gyne but they won't help me. I get one phone call once a year they won't even see me anymore. They said my scan was normal and there wasn't anything they can do. I got a second opinion from a private gyne who suggested some stuff like stopping my periods but NHS gyne wouldnt accept his recommendation and told me to carry on private if I wanted to do that which I couldn't afford.

It's so heavy that days 1-4 I literally flood through a cup and a heavy sanitary towel over and over. I only go out in an emergency because of the high possibility that I will soak through when out of the house. Starts to get a bit better by say 4 but still heavy until about day 8 or 9 when it gradually stops.

Also get horrendous pmt symptoms.

I am constantly anemic. I just get given iron tablets and in told it's common for women to develop anemia around their periods.

This all started happening after my 3rd child was born 6 years ago. The NHS just don't seem to care whatso ever. Tried numerous drs in my surgery. They just think one phone call once a year is adequate. Even tried complaining to PALS 😔
