Snapchat - can someone explain it to me please

I don't use Snapchat although I have an account which I never log into. My teens seem to use it as their main messaging app which I can understand. What I don't understand is the continuous, random shit selfies that they send one another. There appears to be no purpose to this, it doesn't provide any information or appear to have a function. When I asked my 16 year old, they couldn't really give me an explanation beyond "everyone does it". Other than herd mentality what is the psychology of this? I just do not understand it!

It's how I keep in touch with my DD since she left home. Love seeing her random selfies and pics of the dog.

The point is, there is no point. It's fun. I would just lighten up and enjoy it.

@chocolatesaltyballs22 same same. Refuse to do it with anyone except my dds. But it gives me a window into their days.

It's great isn't it? Some random pic or video just helps me to know what she's up to and keeps us connected. We have a streak that we've kept going since she left for uni over 2 years ago.

So I can understand an element of it but when my DC is literally in the car in the dark spending the journey sending a crap photo of themselves multiple times, I just don't get it. Whilst I love my own DC, that seems pointless and a total distraction from being able to have a conversation but apparently they have to reply...
