Reasonable bedtime for a 6 year old?

I share care of my daughter with my ex. We do video calls before bed on an evening. I tend to get her to bed at about 7.15 - 7.30 ish on a usual evening. Recently I've overheard a couple of occasions where my ex has made comments to my daughter along the lines of you should be in bed by now, or it's well past your bedtime. We'd be talking 6.45-7 ish..... am I putting her to bed too late? I struggle to manage bedtime any earlier? What does everyone else do?

I've got a six year old and he's in bed for 8 usually. Sometimes later but only very rarely would it be earlier.

My four year old is also 8pm and my 8 year old is about 9pm.

It's been a long time since any of them were in bed for 7pm, the younger two would be up at 5am if we did that!

@skybluekitty so by the time I leave the room after books teeth etc, it's not far off 8. I thought this was reasonable. I've got no idea how he manages to do it earlier.

I’d say you’re about right. I wouldn’t let it drag past 7.30 though.

it’s not a moral issue though some kids need more sleep than others.

7.30 - 8 is a pretty reasonable time for a 6 year old. My just turned 4 year old isn't in bed until 7 and that's only because he has to be out the door and at nursery for 7.30 several times a week. He can quite easily do 9-10 or even later on occasion with no difficulty.

Bkjahshue · 02/02/2024 22:18

8ish by the time she’s actually asleep for us.

I actually think 7.15 - 7.30pm is on the early side for a 6 year old, most clubs and activities for this age seem to run til 6 - 7pm. So I agree that his bedtimes are far too early.

Edited

Have you asked him why he mentions it?

Are you sure it's not his way of just finishing up the phonecall quicker so he can get on with his night? Could it be that he's got company on those times? or maybe he's going out?

My 6 year old goes up to brush teeth at 7.30, so in bed for more like 7.45ish. She can stay up later on a weekend sometimes, but no matter what time she goes to bed she is up at 6am ish, so definately 7.30 on a school night.

HippeePrincess · 02/02/2024 22:35

At 6 mine were in bed for 7

44PumpLane · 02/02/2024 22:41

Mine at 6 were in bed for 7.30 being read to so asleep for 7.30-8.

However some nights we would tell them it was super late and really past their bedtime even when it wasn't, it made them feel like they were getting a bit of a fun treat and to stay up late, but then we didn't have the grumpy kids the next day....could he be doing that?

New2024 · 02/02/2024 22:42

7:30 on weekdays is fine, 8:00 at weekends

OurfriendsintheNE · 02/02/2024 22:43

7.30-8 here too

SquigglePigs · 02/02/2024 22:59

Your timings seem about right. DD is 5 and we aim for into bed about 7.20-7.30 so with story she's usually dropping off 7.40-7.50.

CattingAbout · 02/02/2024 23:02

We work full time and 6 yo DC is a slow eater with dinner so realistically 7.45 is the earliest they are actually in bed.

Lizzieregina · 02/02/2024 23:05

Once we were out of the toddler stage, bedtime was usually around 8/8.30.

Your timing sounds good to me.

Outofideas79 · 02/02/2024 23:09

Phew, OK I'm not way off the mark!

Depends what time they get up? Between 8-9 here then up for the day at 7.30. Earlier if he's tired and a bit later at the weekend.

TheGriffle · 02/02/2024 23:11

My 6 year old is settling down to sleep around 8.15 after bath, teeth stories etc but doesn’t fall asleep until closer to 9. We’ve tried to get her to sleep earlier but she just keeps getting out of bed 50 times and still falls asleep at 9.

larnituni · 02/02/2024 23:16

Mine is usually asleep at 9pm. She doesn't even get back from one of her after school classes until 7pm, and another one at 6.20pm. Then she still has spellings, homework, bath and reading to do before bed.
