I had to go abroad for family reasons and my neighbour offered to collect my post. If relevant, my post box is 5m from theirs at the front, they are physically well and both 40. On my return, there was post bursting out with some on the ground! 1 admitted they'd forgotten and the other said its been muddy! 😕 I've now found hospital appointment letters in the garden. The appointment was last week, I've waited over 2yrs for it and the hospital said I need be referred again as I didn't attend. No replies needed, just needed to vent 😡

Would you have known about the hospital letter even if they'd emptied the box? I assume they weren't opening your post, just taking it in.

PickledPurplePickle · 02/02/2024 17:29

That's not your neighbours fault, why didn't you let the hospital know you had to go away?

KnickerlessParsons · 02/02/2024 17:29

Why would you need a neighbour to collect your post? 🤔

Yes. I returned last week, and had the box not overflowed and blown into the garden, I would have known about the appointment which was yesterday.

yes, pretty rubbish to say you would do something and then to not do it.

You think they'd have at least scurried over and collected it for you just before you got back.

@KnickerlessParsons if you're away it's best not to let post build up where it can be seen. For obvious reasons.

As said, the box is at the front of the property, not going into a front door. I was away several weeks.

@PickledPurplePickle I did contact the hospital before I went, to be told they didn't know when appointments would come up. As I'd already waited 2yrs, they said it was unlikely to come through whilst away- especially with it including the Christmas period and multiple bank holidays.

But if you returned home last week, and the appt was last week, there's a strong chance you'd have missed it anyway?

But yes, I'd be annoyed they didn't empty your post. They must have noticed it was overflowing. A dead giveaway that the house is unoccupied. Don't ask them next time.

stayathomer · 02/02/2024 17:35

Ah sorry op, that’s typical (of the appointment).

Marmite27 · 02/02/2024 17:36

But wouldn’t you have emptied it yourself on your return a week ago when you realised it hadn’t been emptied? And when doing so, realised some had spilled out and collected it up?

I don’t see how you can blame your neighbour for missing the appointment.

Alwaysalwayscold · 02/02/2024 17:39

You missing your appointment is not your neighbours fault in the slightest.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 02/02/2024 17:39

Your post doesn’t make sense. How does them emptying you box mean that you’ll make your appt?

EmilyGilmoreenergy · 02/02/2024 17:43

The NHS usually send a few texts about appointments you need to make sure your details are up to date on your hospital file.

It's my assumption that OP's letterbox had not been emptied and so had overflowed, with the excess letters blowing around the garden.

She returned home last week, but today she found one of the letters and it was for a hospital appointment which was yesterday. So if she had seen the letter last week when she got home, she would have made it.

Not the neighbours fault and she should have looked around better if she knew they'd blown about.

The letters had blown into OPs garden because the neighbours didn't empty the box and OP only just found the letter in the garden.

If neighbors had collected the post she would've opened it when she got home last week instead of finding it in the garden today

The NHS doesn't always send text reminders. My DDad received an appointment letter after the date of the appointment. He hadn't even been away or anything and all his contact details were up to date.
