Looking for recommendations for a good reliable economical compact family car. Currently have a Fiesta which has been great. We don't drive long distances very often. Thank you

Depends what size, capacity, electric, hybrid, age.

Funkyslippers · 02/02/2024 15:08

Fiesta sized-ish would be good, not hybrid or electric. Not fussed about anything else but would want up to 5 years old

Vauxhall Astra is brilliant. Ours is late 2017, very economical on fuel, very smooth drive, has been super reliable (hopefully not jinxed that now!).
We bought it as we had one as a hire care a few years previous and it was so fab, super nippy, that I couldn't stop thinking about how much I wanted one. Never thought I'd feel that way about an Astra 😂

Have a look at the Kia Venga, absolute fab car! Massive boot for the size too, with loads of leg room. I honestly don't know how there is so much room in such a small car! 😀

We had a Volvo V40 which was a great family car and very safe. I would highly recommend. We only got rid as we needed a bigger car

What's your budget?

Funkyslippers · 02/02/2024 16:01

Around £10k probably

I have a Seat Altea XL and it's perfect for me and my family. I have a 5 year old and 1 year old. It has plenty of AUX port for chargers/headrest DVD player. The back of the front seats have fold up trays for colouring. Middle seat folds down with cup holders. The back windows have built in, pull up sun visors. The boot is huge with extra storage compartment underneath. It's my absolute favorite car I've ever had!

Kia’s are great. Their picanto is similar to a first size, the Rio similar to an Astra. Great economical reliable cars

Number1driver · 04/02/2024 09:48

The answer is any Toyota ! Super reliable and if secondhand you get the balance of a 10 year warranty, just have to service it

I’ve been surprised how much I like my Kia Stonic, like a taller Rio. Really economical 1 litre petrol engine and a long warranty. I really wanted a Skoda but couldn’t afford it!

I have a Dacia Sandero Stepway. It's won the best in car class. Comes with 3 servicing for 3yrs if you buy in February. I am very happy with it.

TeaMistress · 06/02/2024 23:15

Skoda recommendation seconded. Solid car. Lovely to drive. The Scala is a bit bigger than the Kamiq or the Fabia. All of them really good cars. Economical to run and reliable. Lots of decent features and tech on board as wellb

We just got a vw tiguan and it's fantastic

Fuddlefiend · 06/02/2024 23:20

Nissan micra might be a solid bet for you. Look at an n-connector ,n-sport or tekna model. Why not stick with a fiesta though? Decent cars?

PuneorPlayonWords · 06/02/2024 23:26

I recently drove a fiesta as a hire car and liked it a lot.

I really liked Skodas until dh's spontaneously combusted.

Any Japanese car. They'll last a lifetime

This is the one we've gone for in the end. We tried several different makes but they didn't have the spec as wanted and we needed a car quickly. It's arriving tomorrow!

Thanks for all the suggestions

I bought a 5 year old toyota from the main dealer, the aircon stopped working after 6 months, it's being repaired under warranty and a free satnav update, that's what you get ! In my opinion we'll worth it,toyota take care of things and salesperson wasn't pushy
