Help me decide whether to go to a festival with my DD16

She really wants to go, one of her favourite singers will be there. I did a lot of festivals when I was young but not at all bothered now.
It's quite expensive for me.
But it would be me and her and perhaps a nice way to bond? Also a couple of bands I'd enjoy
Wwyd?

What festival is it? Is it a camping one or a day one? Does she want to go with you?

RomeoMcFlourish · 01/02/2024 21:23

Go. Most parents of 16 year olds would be overjoyed if they actually wanted to spend time together, I don’t think it happens very often 😂

Ducksurprise · 01/02/2024 21:26

Yes I would if she wanted me there.

If I had the money I would spend to improve conditions.

My boss went to one with his 16 year old daughter. He wasn’t really looking forward to it but he came back saying they had a great time.

Stopsnowing · 01/02/2024 21:39

Did this last year. It was tiring and crowded but it was overall fun and she appreciated me taking her.

firesandrivers · 01/02/2024 21:40

Okay yes I thought it might be tiring! That's one of my negatives. It's Reading

Well this is what I'm thinking. She doesn't like me a lot of the time so I feel I should embrace the opportunity. Will I regret going or regret not going!

She does want to go with me, I was surprised! It is camping but I'm used to camping and so is she

I might not choose Reading as a first festival to be honest. It's huge and tends to be a bit overwhelming. Is the band she wants to see on anywhere else?

It's Lana Del Ray and I think that's the only place

Then I’d do it! Camp further out in the quieter camp sites and enjoy it.

Sounds like a great idea.
My DD used to sneer teenagerly at my late DH (her dad) and I going to a music festival in Victoria, saying we were so uncool. Then it turned into can you drive me there and I'll camp with my friends, because it was suddenly a seriously cool festival.

Now I go but don't camp, preferring their version of glamping - a shipping container.

You'll have a wonderful time.

Headhurtsthinkingofausername · 01/02/2024 21:47

I’d love to go and think it’s lovely she wants to go with you
By the time my Dd is that age, I think I’ll be too old sadly
Embrace it

@firesandrivers 😅How old?

flipflopfly · 01/02/2024 22:16

I went to one last summer with DD. It was amazing to have the time together.
We talked so much because there's a lot of hanging about at festivals and there were 3 days so no conversation was rushed or forced. We've some great memories.
I would say depending on your DD plan it slower than festivals of your youth, DD and I started slow each day to focus on a handful of acts whereas younger me would have crammed them all in! I was grateful for the slower pace 😀

flipflopfly · 01/02/2024 22:17

I'm 54 so 53 when we went. Never too old 🤘

firesandrivers · 01/02/2024 22:22

I'm 49

My daughter and I have done festivals together for years. She's 17 now and her 25yo brother is coming with us for only the second time this year. We're going with my partner and his adult children too.

My daughter and I used to love going on our own though. It was a bit of an annual girl's road trip - top down on the car, two girls camping together, dancing in fields after dark, fairy lights... She loved it.

Great thanks! Feeling more inspired!

I never went to Reading so it will be new for me too

Oh brilliant, you're all making me think I should do it. Secretly scared I'll hate it and want to sit quietly on my own!
