What's your dream job?

I work in finance and I bloody hate it!! It's so stressful and all I'm doing is making other people rich.

My absolute dream job is to be a midwife. I'm absolutely fascinated by pregnancy and birth.

Unfortunately I'm too old and skint to go to university 😩

It's a nice daydream 😌

Librarian.

Your dream job is to scan and categorise books in alphabetical order by genre? Christ.

I think this is all backwards. My dream job is to not need a job - but trading stocks and shares living on the profits travelling the world. Working my nuts off to retire at 57 and make it a reality

Horrace · 02/02/2024 11:52

Donkey, cat, cow and cat sanctuary

Of 'realistic' dream jobs, I'd say editing a cultural or historical magazine - I'm from an editorial background and applied for something similar the other week, I didn't expect to get it, and I didn't (as it was for a cultural charity and I think wanted someone with charity comms background).

I'm currently doing a content role at a big real estate firm and I like working there but not the job especially - but as I'm about to be made redundant that's a moot point. I may end up making a move into something much more corporate within the business which I never expected to do, but it would put me on a path to earn much more than I ever imagined and to me the benefit is not having megabucks to spend but that I could put away a lot more than I expected in a pension in the second half of my working life and then maybe be able to retire at 65 rather than 70 as I'm sort of expecting to otherwise.

If that doesn't work out, I might take a bit of a pay cut if I found something more like the sort of dream job above or move more back towards editorial, which I enjoy more but the caveat is there are fewer and fewer such jobs available, which is why I pivoted to 'content' led roles.

What's wrong with that? Putting things in order so people can find the books they want.

Also to help people find information they need, do story times with little children, suggest books and do displays, liaise with local authors etc to arrange events at the library, do outreach sessions at primary and secondary schools, take the mobile library to communities without a local one, run local history events and book groups, zine writing sessions, ancestry workshops, summer reading challenges etc etc.

(And get first dibs on new releases)

Sounds pretty good to me.

But then, I fancied being an archivist or curator.

either a small boutique hotel that themed everything for christmas and easter and valentines etc
or be an event planner for things like the oscars or a logistics planner for big productions - i watched a documentary on game of thrones and i'd love to be the person working out who and what equipment and props etc need to be where and in which country etc. Basically the head organiser!

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 02/02/2024 12:30

I'd like to be the person that chooses the music for adverts. Pretty sure that's not a job on its though!

It is - it’s called music supervisor (or at least that’s what it’s called in film and tv)

Flockameanie · 02/02/2024 14:01

I’d like to do my job but without the shot bits. I’m an academic but I spend so much of my job doing pointless admin and dealing with stupid institutional bureaucracy that I don’t get time to do the stuff I got into this job for in the first place - researching and writing. If I could just do that bit and some occasional teaching (only of very enthusiastic and hard working students though) and PhD supervision I’d be very happy

QAnoun · 02/02/2024 14:11

I would like to be a museum curator.

MrsWhattery · 02/02/2024 14:20

My mother in law collects toast racks. When she goes I would love to run a totally pointless toast rack museum in France. A toast rack assault course for the kids outside , different themed walks showcasing the toast racks and a lovely cafe/ shop with toast and jams of many types.
Unfortunately her actual children want to sell the lot because it’s worth a bit. Bastards.

That’s a bummer Marchintospring but in dream job world I would definitely have been a customer! I LOVE those bonkers pointless niche museums, usually found in the arse end of nowhere (also love toast, so I think your business plan is a winner Grin)

I actually have a job that is lots of people’s dream job (writer/editor) but it’s not great money and I’m a bit worn out from the endless self-employed treadmill. I’d love to work in a fabric shop, be a fabric designer or printer, or be a zoologist wandering around faraway forests discovering new insect species.

Chouradanilova · 02/02/2024 14:33

Prima ballerina assoluta of the Kirov.

Attractivensta · 01/06/2025 13:30

I’ve always wanted to run a cosy little bookshop with a café in the back—shelves of second-hand books, good coffee, and a cat sleeping in the window.

Attractivensta · 08/06/2025 08:00

I'd love to run a small animal rescue or be a vet nurse in a peaceful countryside clinic. I started reading more about options through www.veterinaryschoolsu.com/ and it's been really useful for figuring out different paths without feeling overwhelmed. It's helped narrow down what kind of role would suit me best (definitely more hands-on than research!).

Lucelady · 08/06/2025 08:12

My dream was to own a perfumery. I did, nightmare.

I wanted to be a ballerina, I grew too tall.

I'd now like to launch a 'school' for children who cant/won't go to school. Something vocational. No uniform, no awards, no rigidity.
Life skills and kindness. No carrot and stick.

NaeRolls · 08/06/2025 08:18

I'd like to have a small farm and produce ethical eggs and dairy products.

SapporoBaby · 08/06/2025 09:12

Bestselling author living off royalties is the dream! Sadly it’s rare and I have to write a book first lol. If I had all the money and didn’t need to make much I'd like to run creative writing workshops - for young people, elderly people, anyone with any interest!

Id also love to own my own bathing products brand - natural sea salts, candles, bath oils etc.

One can dream

I’m curious, why was it a nightmare?

The School thing I have often dreamed of doing…there’s a couple of tiny independent schools like that near us that are really creative in how they meet children’s needs…I suspect that would prove as challenging as perfume though 🤣
