Experiences with (baby) reflux/CMPA symptoms and Omeprazole

Hi All,

I've been on quite the journey with my DD who is 9 weeks old. She has a suspected CMPA allergy (trialling the CMPA milk) and awful reflux symptoms. She cries a lot, doesn't really sleep, arches her back and is uncomfortable, has an upset stomach and has many other symptoms.

GP has made a referral to the paediatric team as well as prescribed Omeprazole. She was initially prescribed Gaviscon but it made no difference.

What were your experiences with Omeprazole? From what I've gathered it's quite a controversial drug and I only agreed to the doctor prescribing it after trying every other alternative I could think of. Did it help your LO? Did the pros outweigh the cons?

TIA x

Hiya,

Hope you and your daughter are doing OK. Those first months with a refluxy baby were not fun!

My son had awful reflux too (laryngomalacia not CMPA) and was on omeprazole from around the same age as your daughter until 5/6 months. He still had reflux until 8 months, but he stopped having the silent reflux, which was the main reason we opted for the omeprazole.

The issue with omeprazole is long-term usage, but we knew he likely wouldn't be taking it for more than a few months. In our case it was worth it. Long-term acid reflux can cause damage to the throat too. And we were able to give him some comfort from the horrible symptoms.

@JanetRobertaSnakehole thank you. Did it help his sleep or help with relieving some of the pain? The chemist where her prescription was sent didn't have any in stock today so they've ordered some in for tomorrow. However, I've had a day of almost non stop crying, milk refusal and explosive nappies. Praying the Omeprazole provides some sort of relief!

My son had reflux and we just didn’t lie him flat . He slept in a bouncy chair or in bed with me upright. He was under the Brompton Hospital and prescribed Domperidone which is not licensed for babies but it actually was a game changer lAn absolute nightmare so you get 100% sympathy from me .Xx

It sort of helped his sleep... in that he was able to lie down flat without any pain. However, he was so used to us propping him up or lying on our chests that he wouldn't sleep in a bassinet/cot. Even at 2 he still prefers to sleep lying on our chests.

He was a much happier baby once he was taking medication though, so it did help for symptom relief.

DS 1 was on omeprazole from 12w through to about 15m.
Life wasn't perfect on jt, it didn't solve all his problems but it helped massively and reduced some of his crying and unsettledness. The main solution was time and him growing bigger and stronger and generally being strong enough to be more upright as he got older ie, spending more time sat up and standing than laying as a baby, even though we tried to keep him upright as a baby.

Gaviscon was the work of the devil for us. Just constipated him which led to even more problems than just the reflux alone. What a week that was at the time!!! Bloody hell.
