Landrover Discovery owners

Apologies if there’s a better place for this question but I can’t find it!

Any owners of landrover discovery 4’s here?

I’m thinking of buying one but don’t know if I’m opening myself up to a whole world of pain…
I live super rurally, we regularly get flooded in and I already drive a 4x4 - I also have a great mechanic but am I just silly for contemplating it?

My dream would be a defender but budget won’t stretch to 2 cars and I wouldn’t want to always drive a defender 😂 (bumpy and heavy)

any owners that love or hate please share your experience.

Having owned a number of Discovery's over the years I feel I can comment on this... you get some good examples and you get some very very bad examples which will cause no end of problems. A good sign to look for when purchasing is one which hasn't had lots of owners in a short space of time. If you want to look at other options then a Toyota Land Cruiser will give very few problems.

Had one. Felt 'luxury' but was bloody huge with surprisingly little space inside. Ours only had a few minor niggles but lots of stories of expensive repairs on the owner forums.

Switched to a vw T6 kombi van 5 years ago and never looked back. Much nicer to drive, loads more space and has never missed a beat.

Go test drive one and see how you find it. Ours although very powerful, just felt sluggish and boatlike. Whereas the T6 feels like a nippy car with great visibility.

We have a 5 year old discovery which does a mix of motorway and mountain driving. Very happy with it. Snow tyres are fab and it holds the road brilliantly.

I have a car that I am happy with in practice but its just not the car I want if that makes sense so not looking for options... although I appreciate you sharing!

I do think lots of people love their discovery! Just getting cold feet I think!

Following out of interest.

Have you considered the Volvo XC90 too? They are a lot more reliable and have as much space.

Another thing to consider is insurance. I keep seeing horror stories about insurance on a discovery being enormous.

BasiliskStare · 01/02/2024 15:56

Friend said to me that Landrover insurance charges are high - may be worth checking.

We live in London and a lot of discoveries do get stolen. We always put the yellow wheel lock on and also keep keys in the faraday pouch. No issues but maybe we’re lucky? Like the Volvo but it was a lot more expensive!

Radiatorvalves · 01/02/2024 16:09

We pay about £800 for insurance. Haven’t put kids on. Too scared!

Gamingvice · 01/02/2024 19:53

A Volvo is what I’ll go for if we don’t get one I think. It’s just not the same for driving through what I need to drive through! It’s bad up here and getting worse each year. I can wear high coats for the convenience of being able to get around! But thanks will def check insurance checks before buying… I think theft is more for fancy new ones in cities we have very low crime rates here!

My Husband and I have had 9 Landrover products in a row and love them. 2 x Discovery Sports, 4 x Discoverys, 2 x Defenders and now a RR Sport Hybrid. We buy them new (apart from an older Defender) and sell after 3 years when the warranty runs out. All have been hassle free apart from my last Discovery which seemed to have electrical problems.

I also live very rurally and had 3 teen boys who played cricket (cricket bags are HUGE) and needed a big car for that kind of thing. Plus we get flooded a lot and LRs can go up to the door handles in Wading Mode.

TeapotCollection · 02/02/2024 09:20

We had a bad one! Had it for 18 months and it gave us nothing but trouble, was glad to see the back of it. Lost a LOT of money. Never again

chocolateisavegetable · 02/02/2024 10:34

We absolutely love ours. Had some minor issues but they’ve been covered under warranty. We live fairly rural and were particularly grateful for it in some recent heavy flooding. We rescued a few people who seemed to have forgotten that their cars weren’t as high as ours

Great! Thank you 👍🏻
