High temp for a week

My 9 year old has had a cough and a high temperature (spiking 40) for a week now. We’ve seen the doctor who prescribed antibiotics (just in case) but these have had no effect so unlikely it’s bacterial. She’s ok in herself once she’s had medicine but as soon as it wears off the high fever comes right back. Drinking fine, low appetite as expected. Dry cough - oxygen sats are fine. Doctor has said to go back in a few days if it’s not gone.

Has anyone else’s child have a fever for so long, it’s worrying, especially as she’s never normally ill.

I’d go back to doctors, they’ll be happy to see her

Went yesterday and they said to come back Friday

So they’ve only been on abs for a day? Might need a little bit more time

Have you done a covid test?
I've just had covid and had a high temperature for far longer than I normally do. I didn't cough though.

NachosAndCheese · 01/02/2024 12:54

Mine did when they had covid. If she’s only just started antibiotics I wouldn’t go back yet.

Vaseoflife · 01/02/2024 13:44

No it’s day 3 of antibiotics. Have been to doctors more than once!

not covid according to the test we did days ago

Oh I see. My son was like this too with Covid although I’m not sure it was up to 7 days but he normally spikes a high temperature and it was high for a long time.

if they’re well in themself more or less - hydrated, not too lethargic and eating something I wouldn’t worry too much after 2 doctors visits but go back again tomorrow see what they say.

not that it really matters whether it’s down to Covid or a different virus but the tests expire so make sure it’s up to date. Also I was poorly and it didn’t pick up my Covid positive until day 3 for some reason? (My family are CEV hence the testing)

weirdly my son didn’t get Covid the second time it hit our family.

Hi, just seen your post as my daughter is 9 and is on day 7 of high temp on and off too. Currently 39.1 after nurofen. How is your LO doing now? Anyone else going through this? She has had a mild cough over the past week. Neg covid test today. Temp lower in day but really spikes at night. She has lower appetite but is eating and drinking. She’s really pale but laughing and chatting until evening then so tired and temp high again. It’s so worrying.

Is your dd ok now? My dd (10) has had a low grade temperature for a week now. She hasn't moved off the sofa all week and has very little appetite. Dr says it's viral but she's never been ill like this before.

Snoopy10 · 23/03/2024 10:45

Hi Rockstar - sorry to hear about your daughter. Hope she feels better soon. My dd is fine now except for extreme fatigue. She is back at school but is fast asleep by 8pm and asks to go to bed! She normally falls asleep at 9pm. We went to the drs after a week of temps around 39 plus and he said it had probably been Covid. He gave her antibiotics and her temp went within a 48 hrs. Her cough has now gone. He said that Covid tests are useless (she tested neg on home test) and only picks up the old strains. He said he has never seen anything like the amount of bacterial infections following a virus as he has since January. He said after 5 to 7 days bacterial infections can develop - she wasn’t worse but wasn’t getting better after 9 days so I went with the antibiotics. She’s much better but the effects of Covid have left her with chronic fatigue before, so this does seem to fit the pattern. I would go back to the drs if she’s the same by Monday - viruses do take a while to get over but after a week and no improvement it may be something else is going on. Wishing you lots of luck - try not to worry as it seems there is a lot of this going round.
