I want to apply for a TEFL job but my experience is from 20 years ago.

I got my CTELFA IN 1996 and spent four years in Japan teaching adults both general and business English and to school children.

I've done other work since - direct marketing, charity work (fundraising). And had a family.

I've seen a couple of English language teaching jobs advertised for both adults and children. I would love go apply but how would I justify my application when my applicable experience is from 20 years ago........

Go for it anyway. You at least have a decent Cert and sone experience in the classroom, I'm sure you will also have a fair amount of transferable skills.
Obviously things will have changed since you last taught. There is a lot more tech in use these days as you'd expect, interactive whiteboards, digitalised coursebooks, etc etc
Classes are far more student centered than they used to be and there's less teaching and more 'facilitating' these days.
There are a number of refresher style courses you could look at ... freebie ones as well as those that cost a bit, look at NILE, IH, and FutureLearn for ideas.
Oh, one thing to look out for .... is it a typical TEFl job (language school here/overseas) or ESOL (sonething else that has changed over the years).
