Has anyone worked for Camelot and know how soon they contact the winner?

DP and I have a regular conversation every time the Euromillions jackpot is won by someone in the UK. I ask him to check, he says they would have phoned him immediately after the draw if they have your phone number - which in my head is held around 9pm. I also think that they would give you some time to get your head together before making contact.

However, to settle the argument, if you have worked for Camelot, or won a large amount of money, do you know roughly when they contact winners if you buy a ticket through the National Lottery app so they have your details. Do they even contact them or is it up to you to make yourself known for a large prize that won’t be paid automatically?

At the moment, we could be sitting on millions but he won’t check his ticket to find out - I checked my app before I was out of bed this morning! 😀

They don't contact the winner - how would they have your number? People still buy lottery tickets at a shop, with cash.

You have to contact THEM to say you think you've won. If they had the details of everyone who had bought a ticket, there would never be any unclaimed prizes, woudl there?

LeGinge · 31/01/2024 11:57

I agree with the above. If you've bought your ticket online then you get an email. On a recent Lottery thread someone said that it's a different email from the "News about your ticket" one. More like "contact us about your account" type thing.

But yeah, highly doubt they call you. They don't care if money is unclaimed, it all goes to good causes...apparently....

On the app, you add your phone number and address so they have the details if you’ve bought your ticket that way. Clearly if you bought it from the corner shop they won’t have your details.

We’ve both heard the radio advert that has a recording of someone phoning a £1 million winner and telling them on the phone. This is why he thinks the winner receives a phone call.

I shall hold onto the thought that we are still sitting on millions till he checks his personal emails (which he only does in the evening - he’s a weirdo). Unless someone from Camelot can confirm otherwise….

I've heard that advert - I took it to be the winner calling Camelot to check his ticket and them confirming he had indeed won.

I'd really like to read an 'I work / worked for Camelot' AMA. 😀

PossumintheHouse · 31/01/2024 12:35

They don’t contact the winner - the onus is on you to check and confirm. That’s why there are a bazillion newspaper articles about unclaimed prizes.

Or an AMA from the person who deals with the big winners😀

I’m going to have to reset DP’s expectations! I wish he’d just get the app on his phone.

You get an email saying you've won a significant prize if it's a big win and you've paid via the app.

I've had plenty of emails saying good news about my ticket but still waiting for the significant win one.

mindutopia · 31/01/2024 13:51

This is totally not an answer to your question at all, but as a child, we lived in a house with a landline number that was one number off the lottery number (not sure which lottery because I was 8!). But we would get daily calls from people shouting and screaming that they'd won, and one of my parents would have to get them to calm down so they could explain that they had in fact dialed the wrong number for the lottery but try again and congrats on their winnings! 😂Ha, in retrospect, maybe this does answer your question actually! At least in the 80s, you had to ring.

andymary · 31/01/2024 14:01

You'd get an email (sometimes can take up to 24 hours after the draw to come through), and probably a notification on the App.

9GreenBottles · 31/01/2024 14:09

I have guilted him into looking at his email and there is no notification 😢 however you have given me hope that one could still be forthcoming. Using the app would be definitive but he’s not moving with the times 🙄

I very much doubt Camelot would contact you at all, as they do not run the National Lottery any more.

They did a year ago though, when the question was asked.

I won £20k back in 2015. I checked app and saw it. Never received a phone call but I do recall that received an email that I had to claim via the app within a certain time rather than it just be paid out as normal for smaller amounts. I still can't quite believe I won it. Was near the end of the year (maybe New Years eve) I think and was from an extra raffle ticket or something that was given to me when I bought a normal lottery ticket.

Camelot was bought out by Canadian pension fund Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.
