What does DVLA want from me?!

So I recently moved and got married and need to update both my name and my address on my driving licence. You can only do both by post, so I dutifully filled in the correct form and sent off with my driving licence and marriage certificate.

I have now received this letter back where they are asking me to send proof of my previous name and they list what I can send- this includes my marriage certificate... Which they already received and they have now returned to me. The only other ID I have is my driving licence... Which I already sent. What do they want from me? They definitely saw my marriage certificate as the letter said not to send it back again.

They mention Deed poll as proof but do I really need to register a new name with Deed poll to get a driving licence when they have already had my marriage certificate which they list in the letter as proof? Is there something I am not getting? I am so confused. I tried calling them but it just rings with no answer.

What does DVLA want from me?!

What is on the list? Anything you haven't already sent?

TippledPink · 31/01/2024 00:18

I attached the letter to my post, can you see it or is it not showing? It says marriage certificate, deed poll, or gender reassignment certificate (doesn't apply to me!) or divorce certificate (also doesn't apply).

I had a very similar problem. I sent a letter from HMRC that had my old name and my NI number and that was sufficient. It was a ridiculous, it took months!

Sorry op I am on my phone it doesnt alwags show photos.

From their website
UK birth, adoption and naturalisation certificates
You can use a UK birth, adoption or naturalisation certificate, but you must send it with one of the following:

National Insurance card, or a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions or HM Revenue and Customs showing your National Insurance number - find your National Insurance number if you’ve lost it
photocopy of the front page of a benefits book or an original benefits claim letter
P45, P60 or pay slip

So I would try that or as other poster suggested. When I changed mine they accepted marriage certificate only. Bit this was years ago

You would only need to produce a deed poll, if that was the means by which you had changed your name. If you have changed your name by marriage, then the only proof required would be a marriage certificate, which you already submitted. There’s obviously been an admin. cock up. Either try and get through on the contact number (good luck!) to explain the situation, or re-submit the document they are asking for, which in your case is the marriage certificate. I know they’ve already seen it, but apparently in this instance something’s gone awry with their procedures and there’s no record of it. I doubt it’s that they want something else from you.

Is the address the sticking point perhaps? Do they need proof of address at your old and new homes, or proof of address with your new name at your old address (or old name at new address) to prove you are the same person as the marriage certificate says?

@MarthaJonesPhone Thank you, can I ask whether this was a print out or an original letter? I can obtain a print out but I fear that I'll get another returned application in a months time!

Original document. Everything has to be original.

TheBitterBoy · 26/06/2024 18:18

I think you are maybe misunderstanding them. They want proof of your previous name. Your marriage certificate is proof of your new name, which they have accepted. Birth certificate is proof of your original name, so send that plus marriage certificate.

MarthaJonesPhone · 26/06/2024 19:20

Unfortunately that's not the case. They need proof of NI number.
