Selective Mutism

Just looking for any ideas/experience really. My DD is 4 and started reception in September. She only speaks to me, her dad and one set of grandparents. She never said a word at preschool and so far hasn’t spoken at school at all. We think it probably is selective mutism. She speaks to me the second she leaves the school gates. She’s also now able to speak to me in front of her teacher. This has taken a few months. Im just looking for any ideas as to how we can help her or if anyone has any personal experience of selective mutism I’d love to hear about it.

Look at SMIRA which is the charity that deals with this. They have a Facebook page.

Hi, I have a teenager with SM, and my advice is to get a referral to speech and language as early as you can. It’s an anxiety based disorder that is misunderstood, so it’s important that preschool staff understand it and don’t mistake it for shyness.
