Haven't changed address on driving license - a fine when I change it?

Hello, I was in a busy, frazzled pickle when I moved house one and a half years ago. I saw a few days ago that you can get a fine for not changing the address promptly with the DVLA if your address isn't correct on your license.

I'm about to do it now, but if I say on the online form that I moved one and a half years ago, does anyone know if they will fine me?

Or would I only get fined if I got stopped by the police, or if my car couldn't be traced for things like parking tickets, congestion charges or ULEZ (no problems with this as all the other paperwork for the car is up to date and I have sadly had (and paid) fines.)

I realise I should have changed in, but will I automatically get fined for changing it after so long?

I didn't change my address on mine until I applied for a photo licence, some 20 years after I'd moved. I had moved five times in those years too.
Nothing happened, they didn't even ask me for a date that I'd moved, they just sent me the new licence.

DoggusDomesticus · 31/01/2024 07:41

No, took me 5 years when I moved to my current house. They don't know the date of your move, and frankly, this is the DVLA; they don't know their arse from their elbow.

DoggusDomesticus · 31/01/2024 07:41

And speeding tickets are unrelated to your license; they go to the address of the registered keeper of the vehicle.

I've moved several times. One address I didn't get round to changing it to then moved again! Been in new place for a year now and licence is still registered at an address I've not lived at for 15 months! It's on my 'to do' list for my week off next week! I've never had a problem with it.

sleekcat · 31/01/2024 07:55

I didn't change mine for ten years! One of my addresses never featured on it at all. Nothing happened, no fine or anything.

I had to move loads of times due to renting and having to move, I sometimes forgot to change it at all during stressful times.

I’ve only just changed it after 18 months in this house. I don’t remember having to even say when the date I moved?!

Yes, I think people put far too much faith in these organisations.

I moved 24 years ago and haven’t changed my address. It’s still a paper one and to be honest I haven’t even got it anymore, my ex when I left kept it and has never given it back.
Im really worried about applying for a new one 😬 do I just apply for a photo one with a change of address as well? Do they want you to send the old one back?

Did your OH just miss the skipped address on his form or did he put it in? Ive not changed my address and ive moved twice. Going to do it now but it asks for previous address for 5 years and ive lived at three but it has old old address on it. Worried about a fine as i have no money to pay it if i get one

Did you have to put that address in when changing it? The address on mine is from years ago and ive moved twice since then.

Did you have to say how long you been at prev address too?

Wedoourbest · 03/07/2024 22:03

I had a brain fart that lasted 20 years !! I just applied online and there were no consequences.

rainbowsparkle28 · 03/07/2024 22:04

I took a while with mine and didn't have any issues. I wasn't stopped in that time so who knows if would have been had I been. Either way get on it asap you cannot change the past now but can simply get it done as quickly as you can. As an aside - do you have valid ID to vote tomorrow (if eligible)?

My OH skipped a whole address on his driving licence and nothing happened.

Can i ask if they just missed out an address on the online application? My address on license is at least 2 moves ago and its asking for last 3 years which the last address isnt on the license so worried about a fine because of that.

Yes, missed it out and quoted the one before that which was on his old licence. It had been about 4 years I think.

sleekcat · 04/07/2024 08:21

I didn't change mine for 10 years! Nothing happened.

Gemgemz1984 · 31/07/2024 07:36

Hi I wondered how you got on? I also forgot mine for years but it was in my parents address so I was still contactable. I changed other things but totally didn't think about my licence. Really don't want a fine. I put I just moved as it's my partner address been living between the 2 places.

StormingNorman · 31/07/2024 07:38

I changed my licence a year or so late and there was no fine. I think their attitude is better late than never and they don’t want to put people off doing it.

Marshmallowtoastie · 31/07/2024 07:44

I was told that the address on your license doesn’t need to be where you live, it just needs to be somewhere you can collect post from. For example if you have no fixed address, or you have term time addresses etc. Lots of people have their parents address on there. There’s no way of them knowing if that’s the case or not. Your insurance needs to be correct. And your vehicle needs to be registered to the correct place. But that’s it. Obviously you still need to fix it because you might miss important post from them like tax reminders and it’s a useful form of ID
but no fine
