Early potty training?

DD is nearly 16 months. She’s not yet walking but probably close. She’s started going in a corner or quiet place to do her poo and even comes back and gets a nappy when she’s ready to be changed. Is this common or might she be ready to train early? (Of course she’ll have to be able to walk so we’re not there yet, but I didn’t have this at all with my oldest so very new to me!)

I'd put her in the potty at nappy changes or when you are running the bath but wouldn't put her in pants yet.

Thank you, Oh yes I wouldn’t put her in pants yet, she can’t walk to get to the potty yet! But I am surprised to see these “readiness” signals. A potty sounds like a good start.

Yes, give her the opportunity and praise for anything in the potty but no pressure. We started young with the potty and DS would pretty much always go given the opportunity but he wasn't actually fully trained for wees until two and a half. It saved a lot of nappies and there was no battle of wills or stress later.

Just to manage expectations, my DS was like that from a similar age. I was convinced he'd train easily and early because he was showing all the signs. It took him until he was 3.5 to actually get the hang of it. No harm in trying though!

Thank you for sharing your experiences! Yes I won’t have too many expectations, don’t want to create too much pressure. Was just surprised to see her bring me a nappy today after she’d done a poo in the corner!

We started popping DD on the toilet at 14 months when she looked like she needed a poo. Kept nappies on and pressure off but got her used to the idea of sitting on the toilet and she began to wee on there too. By 22 months she was fully trained and has barely had an accident since. Why not follow her lead and have a go :)

I would start toilet training. Although it takes longer for obvious reasons when they are so young, I think you are more likely to avoid the refusal you can get with slightly older children. And it will save on nappies.

Thanks, I reckon we’ll give it a go. Not at all expecting anything overnight but she is quite consistent I bring in a nappy when she needs a change so we’ll see!
