Speech & Language Unit in Mainstream school - seeking recommendations

Hi, I'm looking for a school in London or Berkshire / Buckinghamshire for my son who has speech and language impairement (DLD - developmental language disorder). He has an EHCP. He can truly flourish if he gets the right support in school. Teachers need to be able to incorporate strategies into their teaching and have a good level of understanding of this speech disorder. I don't believe special schools are suitable for him, most special schools seem to be focused on autism needs. Does anyone know of mainstream school with a language unit attached? Or specialise in SLT? We live in North London currently, but would move if we find the right school. Currently at primary school level, but obviously thinking about longer term secondary school too.

Hi, sorry this is probably a bit late but our son went to John Ruskin Primary in Camberwell for 3 years and we thought it was excellent.

My son went to the Speech and Language resource base at Highwood Primary school, Woodley in Berkshire. It's under Wokingham Borough Council.

Can very much recommend.

My son went to a speech and language unit attached to a mainstream school. Unfortunately, it's not near you, but sending him to a speech and language unit benefited him no end. He came on leaps and bounds, and it was the best thing we ever did for him. There was also a unit attached for children with other needs. My friends child has gone there, but I don't think she has been overly impressed, so I think a speech and language unit sounds like a good idea for your dc.

I'm not sure how far you are from Surrey, but Moor House School is a specialist DLD school with an excellent reputation.

Hi @Tigga1978, did you find somewhere at the time?

My DS was also diagnosed with a language disorder as well as autism, he did catch up in mainstream infant school though. I think we were lucky as I can't remember what provision they put in place for him besides the SaLT, but he was discharged as having caught up by five (Year 1).

I hope you find somewhere suitable, it makes such a difference having a proactive school.

Smallwood Primary (Wandsworth)has a language unit attached but there are small, limited places.
