EuroMillions fantasy - give all women £1m?

TrentCrimmIsHot · 30/01/2024 10:33

I seem to have killed another thread with this thought but I meant it to be a separate thread anyway.

I was idly wondering - if I won the EuroMillions (I won't as I haven't entered) and gave £1 million to every woman in the UK, what effects would it have? How many relationships would break up because women can finally leave a shitty partner? Then what would happen to the housing market? What would happen to the economy? To private funding for decent education and health care and mental health care?

Well the EM jackpot is never over £150m so only 150 women would get the million?

But on your premise of 'what would happen if every woman got one million?'

I'll answer.

Say just married/cohabiting women-

I think at least half would leave their partners, buy their own homes, quit work to look after their DCs if they have them.

Women who want DCs but aren't in relationships would be more likely to pursue solo motherhood.

It's a sad fact that most mothers are still financially dependent on men.

I don't think this is what girls expect when they are growing up/ studying for exams.

Hiphopopotamonster · 30/01/2024 10:45

You realise there are more than 100 women in the U.K. right…?

Errols · 30/01/2024 10:47

Well. This particular woman would blow it all on a trolley dash through Berganza.

I couldn't care less about the common good.

Hiphopopotamonster · 30/01/2024 10:47

Also, what would happen if every woman in the U.K. (so essentially half the U.K. population) got 1million? The economy would be screwed, inflation would go crazy, prices would increase. Not quite the feminist utopia I think you’re hoping for!

JamJar59 · 30/01/2024 10:49

Hyper-inflation would occur, plus the money would have to spent in order to be used so it would go back in to the pockets of men who run those businesses.

WandaWonder · 30/01/2024 10:51

So you would give money just to women who pick terrible partners, no not all stay because of money

No I realise that. That's why I realised the initial impulse wasn't necessarily as great as it may seem.

You do realise this is idle fantasy, right?

I think if you gave all money £100k there would still be a lot more separations!

Comedycook · 30/01/2024 11:26

Inflation would go through the roof

The jackpot is in € and converted to £ using the €/£ rate at the time.
The maximum the jackpot can reach is €250 million.

Comedycook · 30/01/2024 11:35

It's a silly idea. I mean there's not enough money in the jackpot anyway.

But if you suddenly make half the population millionaires, prices will sky rocket and the money won't be worth that much

Also men would benefit from the money... plenty of women actually have nice husbands that they love as well as brothers, sons and fathers they'd share the money with.

Why though?

Assume that half of that would be split 50/50 in a divorce. 100k isn’t a lot anyway.

Would more separations not happen when inheritance is handed down? Don’t see how a gift or inheritance could be treated any differently.

Patrickiscrazy · 30/01/2024 11:41

Brilliant. I'd be setting myself up to live on my own until my last day! 😊

FrippEnos · 30/01/2024 11:52

A lot of men would become half a million better off when going through the divorce.

Ooh, a fellow Berganza lover.

if it ever happens, please may I come and watch?

TrentCrimmIsHot · 30/01/2024 12:20

Hmm, I'd have to include a rule that is immune from divorce settlements. 😄

I know at least one friend who would leave her husband, so I bet quite a number would. Housing market will see a surge in the lower end. A fair few renters will buy. A baby boom too maybe!

financialcareerstuff · 30/01/2024 15:37

I don't think you need a million, if the idea is to free mothers who feel trapped in abusive, toxic relationships with men.

Even 10K would radically change many women's ability to move out and feed their kids until getting on their feet.

No, it's not reality - but it would be wonderful to be able to provide that.

Hereyoume · 30/01/2024 16:00

You would cause inflation to spike.

Families to break up.

Create a whole generation of damaged kids.

House prices and rent would rise like a rocket because twice as many homes would be needed.

And even the couples who stayed together would lose most of their money on the said inflation.

It would just make things worse and not empower anyone.

LatteFlatte · 30/01/2024 16:14

Interesting thought! I think lots of women would leave their partners. I also think it highly likely that it would increase violence and murder against women as the men wouldn't be happy, so it would need to be done as secretly as possible.

Runningoutofusernamestochange · 30/01/2024 16:24

Maybe you could set up a trust that contributed to “running away funds,” or invest in property to be used as safe houses for women fleeing abuse. I think the interesting discussion would be around how much women would feel gave them security.

@JamJar59 you only have to read the number of threads with women in poor situations saying they are desparate to get out but have nowhere to go- some can't pass rent checks criteria etc- if they could put a years rent down or do airbnb for a while for breathing space- There are a fair few who would be out.
