Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

Butterscotch Angel Delight

Beetroot sandwich with picked crinkle cut beetroot (don't know why the crinkles make it taste better but they do!)

Sandwich made of tinned red salmon mixed with black pepper and tiny bit of vinegar

Vienetta - DH bought one as a joke at Christmas and we loved it

Yes yes to the 'traditional' salad with ham and warm/buttered new potatoes boiled eg etc

Crisp sandwich on white bread spread with salad cream

Pate on toast - just bog standard / cheapish Brussels pate

Mini savoury eggs

Fried egg, chips and beans (extra points if chips are homemade and done in a chip pan)

I'm seeing a definite lean towards the sandwich Grin

Egg in a Mug.

Two soft boiled eggs, 2 slices of generously buttered bread torn into small pieces, a bit of salt and pepper. Place in a large mug and chop it all up with a fork and mix together. The result is a yolky, buttery thing of loveliness.

I do a ham joint in my slow cooker. Soaked it for a couple of hours to get the salt out. Tip water away. Score the rind, in the slow cooker for four hours on high. Carrots and onion and a bay leaf or two. I did half and half water and cider, the liquid should fully cover the meat.
Honey and mustard glaze: Dessert spoon of Powdered English mustard, couple spoons of runny honey mixed together.
When done have the Oven on at the ready, remove from S/C, take off the rind but leave the fat on, score the fat, cover the meat with double layer of foil but leave the fat exposed. Gently apply the glaze to the scored fat. Into a hot oven for twenty minutes.

I must be very old-fashioned as I still use/eat/wear many of the things mentioned on this thread, including:

Nightdresses
Bar soap
Hot water bottles
Lemon meringue pie
Sardines on toast
Homemade rice pudding (jam on the side)
Steamed pudding
Bread and butter pudding
Fruitcake
Proper butter (always)
Milk delivered in glass bottles by milk float

I'd add:

Proper linen table napkins
Egg salad with the egg sliced on one of those little wire egg slicers (looks like a little round guitar!)
Tea pot with tea cosy

Tinned new potatoes- @diddl.
We used to have them whole, fried with salt and a little chilli powder and they were fantastic.

They're pretty good with just salt too. They get nice and crispy on the outside.

I still use these to fry. Delicious .

I also use the Nigella ham recipe but slightly different. Morrisons still do gammons with a proper layer of fat on (unlike Waitrose or Tescos). Unsmoked so you don't need to mess around soaking the salt off. Then boil with cinnamon stick, onion, whatever u like (cherry Coke according to Nigella!). The secret to it not drying out and being horrid is letting it completely cool still in the water. Then take out of the water, carefully remove the rind and then score the fat into criss cross diamond shapes. Stick cloves into the shapes. Then I just spread English Mustard, honey and brown sugar onto the fat and then blast in the oven until caramelised. Put foil under the ham before it goes into the oven unless you enjoy washing up stuff.

Ooh. Lincolnshire Plum Loaf and a good wodge of vintage Lincolnshire Poacher.

Someone mention beef spread. My pack up had Shipham’s chicken spread on the regular. I suspect there was very little chicken in it!

And I now have a craving for Coronation Chicken.

And things in jars makes me also think of Heinz Sandwich spread, or “vomit in a jar” as it was known in our house.

And a Vesta Chicken Supreme or a Beef Chow Mein!

So funny I saw some of that hinze spread in the supermarket the other day and said to my husband what on earth is that it looks like sick! Urgh!! Couldn’t bring myself to every try that!

High tea in Scotland,( very different from Afternoon tea )
it was usually a traditional meal like fish and chips or steak pie and then toast, scones and cakes with cups of tea! A real treat and you could get it in posh restaurants in a Scotland but haven’t seen it for years.

I didn't think at mid 40s, I'd be considered old fashioned but I guess I am. Although I like lots of spicy 'international' foods and cook them regularly. Some old fashioned foods are just staples.
The 'retro' ham or cheese salad is the best kind of salad.
Prawn cocktails have never been out of fashion, to me.
My favourite Sandwiches include ham and piccalilli, corned beef and Gherkin, and egg and cress. My 16 year old loves a cheese and Branston pickle sandwich with a nice brew.
Black forest Gateaux is my retro dessert of choice. It felt so luxurious when my mum would bring one of those out in the 80s! Sometimes it was tinned mandarins with tinned Carnation milk. Tinned fruit salad with carnation can stay in the 80s for me.

My nan used to get us a bag of crab claws to smash and devour from the fish market in sheffield, utterly divine!
Thorntons toffee with a hammer!
and my all time fave Battenburg..oh yum!

BouleDeSuif · 30/01/2024 18:15

@awaynboilyurheid the Royal George hotel in Perth does high tea every day- I had one last year and it was beautiful!

Pollydarling · 30/01/2024 18:32

I miss prawn cocktail starters. Most pub chains still have them but don't see them often anywhere else

They're not the same though

They're made with enormous tasteless south sea warm water prawns, or have funny fancy rose marie sauce that isnt just plain old rose marie sauce, they normally all use little gem or iceberg rather than garden lettuce and have fancy bread rather than plain, sliced, wholemeal bread with butter.

Corned beef pie, homemade shortcrust pastry made with lard.

Hankies for coat pockets. Changed every day of course. More effective than a tissue. (I would not use if I was ill obvs, those tissues are binned).

I took a hankie out of my sleeve on the playground the other day to wipe my nose (it had run a tiny bit because the weather was so cold and windy). The children were bemused to say the least!

MarigoldGoes · 30/01/2024 20:14
