If you won the lottery, say.. 10 million. Would you keep working?

A colleague said to me today that the true test of if you like your job is the lottery test, and apparently, this proves most people hate their jobs.

If you won a life changing amount, would you keep your job… if you truly hate your job, you wouldn’t even work your notice.

I think I would go crazy with nothing to do but would like to open a luxury dog hotel 😂 but in terms of my actual job, I would absolutely leave but really like the people so like to think I would work my notice.

How about you?

Wouldn’t continue paid working but would continue doing my voluntary role.

Legendairy · 29/01/2024 23:45

I would work my notice which is 3 months, I like my job but not sure I would have the motivation to carry on. I think DH would quit also but probably work his notice, his job is extremely stressful and at times he hates it but he would never let his colleagues down. We could easily look after our families with £10m and have enough to live on. We probably wouldn't move now but would have a massive redesign on the house. We'd be saying goodbye to well over a million to buy anything that would improve our quality of life really so it's just not worth it (plus all the extra upkeep etc) so 10m is plenty.

If we won a million we would probably dramatically reduce our hours.

You'd need more than £10 million for the rest of your life. Unless you were really miserly/careful with it.

Did you misread it as one million?

Morewineplease10 · 30/01/2024 00:02

In my current job, not a fucking chance!

But I would start my own business (after I'd done plenty of gallivanting!)

KyleWalkersLibido · 30/01/2024 00:08

I would leave my job, simply because there would be people more in need of it than I would be. I would continue all of my voluntary work though, as I genuinely enjoy that.

There are a few families I know through my children who I don’t particularly have a strong friendship with, but I would help them financially as I know they are good people that life hasn’t treated kindly, so being able to help them would be incredible.

TiredMum30 · 30/01/2024 00:13

I'd quit and retrain in something I could do working from home

MCOut · 30/01/2024 00:14

@cardibach It very much depends on how many people you want to make secure, to what extent and how willing you would be to touch the capital (I would want to avoid that). Us, DS, the Mums, the Aunts, Uncle, 5 siblings and 4 Niblings atm. It’s a lot of people, nobody would be living the high life.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 30/01/2024 00:16

I wouldn't work. But I'd fill my time doing the degree I never did when I was young, and volunteering. Oh and travelling a bit. And getting a dog. I'd buy a house too (currently out of reach) but only something small that I can manage on my own.

Ursulla · 30/01/2024 00:23

Of course I wouldn't keep working. What's the point of doing it if it doesn't change your life? Anyone who would keep working doesn't deserve to win it.

I wouldn't completely leave work in the lurch, like - I mean, I'd ring up and tell them I'd stopped working. But yeah I'd never work again if I didn't have to.

RhannionKPSS · 30/01/2024 00:25

I’d be very happy with that amount, invest some and give at least 20K each to various charities around the world, go on holiday and open a women only art & writing space with a book shop selling only books by women.

clary · 30/01/2024 00:32

Yeah @muchalover that's a ridiculous thing to say.

I have been working full time for nearly 40 years and I doubt if I have earned a million pounds in total in that time (pre tax as well!). And yet somehow I have survived; in fact I even treat myself to the occasional luxury!

I would retire now if I won £1m on the P bonds tbh. I do like many things about my job but I am old and would stop working if I had that kind of money.

I would maybe still tutor as that is fun and I would have a lot more flex which would be good. Also I would increase the scope of the volunteering I currently do, which would keep me busy.

Ursulla · 30/01/2024 00:35

I'd set up my own classical music festival somewhere picturesque like a pretty southern European coast and book all my favourite performers, over Easter, run a schools outreach/music therapy centre in the run up to summer, spend summer on the beach and autumn/winter in my volcano lakefront house in Guatemala.

OnlyTheBravest · 30/01/2024 02:56

Leave without notice, hands down. Take a 6 month sabbatical and then return to work as a part time HLTA/TA.

Friarclose · 30/01/2024 04:06

I would be out of there so fast there would be a me shaped hole in the office wall

I don’t know how much you earn but as a gross salary I reckon I’ll earn just over a million in the rest of my working live if I work to retirement age at current salary. So another £9m will do me just fine thanks! £1m on a house and £8m in the pension pot.
no, I wouldn’t be in work on Monday!

Pushkinini · 30/01/2024 07:00

No way. I'd like to think that my employer would let me buy my way out of my 3 months notice but I suspect they wouldn't. I'd open up a cat cafe/bookshop to fill my time.

ThreeRingCircus · 30/01/2024 07:50

Tricky one.

I do enjoy my job, as much as I moan about it sometimes! I work 3 days per week and it is mentally stimulating plus I have nice colleagues. I'm not sure I'd want to give up having that structure and sense of purpose.

I'm tempted to say I'd stay working there until the moment it became too much hassle. In reality I'd probably hand in my notice and do more volunteering. I listen to children read at DDs' primary school so would continue that and I'd like to do some volunteer gardening somewhere to get me out and about. The mental stimulation side could be found elsewhere reading and learning.

So probably, yes I'd quit my job but it wouldn't be an instantly easy decision which must mean I quite like it!

Deathraystare · 30/01/2024 08:12

Yes I would. At the moment I work 'bank'. Not working in a bank but a sort of temp. The work is undemanding (remind me of this when it all kicks off again! I work as a receptionist in a Mental Health Centre). I love the buzz of seeing people, being able to help people etc etc.

During one Christmas week when I was supposed to work I got Covid and hated staying home. It felt really isolating.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 30/01/2024 08:18

I'd carry on with my job but part time. And in the other part I would train to do something I want to do now but can't find the time/money.

But I'm attached to my job and the people- would be sad to just leave. And I get a lot from it.

TrentCrimmIsHot · 30/01/2024 08:33

I was wondering-if I won the EuroMillions (I won't as so haven't entered) and gave £1 million to every woman in the UK, what effects would it have? How many relationships would break up because women can finally leave a shitty partner? Then what would happen to the housing market? What would happen to the economy? To private funding for decent education and health care and mental health care?

I think you’d need to do far more than win the EuroMillions to achieve this!

DaftFlerken · 30/01/2024 11:16

I would still do something - work part time or volunteer work. I think not interacting on a frequent basis with other people make you very out of touch with the real world.

This made me laugh so much Grin

LikeagoddamnVampire · 30/01/2024 11:24

I'm self employed and love what I do, so I would probably carry on but def move house to have a better workspace for me, take a lot more time out for travel and relaxation, maybe hire a part time PA/bookkeeper to help with the admin stuff to free up more time.
And I'd definitely get more dogs!

WineIsNotGoodForMe · 30/01/2024 11:31

I used to say no, work was such a big part of me.

Now, £10m would more than cover my salary to the age of 100, so I would say yes.
