I realize this isn't entirely a women's issue or even a British issue but I need to get it off my chest. So just a forewarning I'm going to be complaining about a lot of American politics so pop your popcorn and have a sit because my country is dramatic as fuck this year thanks to the upcoming election and Trump trying to run again.
Okay so to establish some context. I'm a dual citizen. I was born and raised in Texas. I never fit in there. I never got along with anyone there really with the exception of some very niche personalities. I thought something was wrong with ME until I visited Canada and I actually fit in WITHOUT TRYING. I decided to study there and I fell in love with a man there married him and moved there and started a family.
The rest of my family is still in Texas. I cannot believe all the nonsense that has happened since I left. Trump, the insurrection, Roe vs wade getting overturned. And now he's trying to make a come back. My husband jokes that I've dodged a bullet by getting out of there a lot.
But now I really am legitimately scared. I'm not trying to be dramatic. If this talk happened a few years ago I would have shrugged it off as electioneering drama but after everything I have huge doubts.
Basically the Texan Governor Greg Abbot has declared that Mexico is trying to invade Texas and President Biden is aiding them basically. 25 republican states have not only taken his side but also sent troops to Texas. 😳
Apparently the issue is that there are too many illegal immigrants coming over and many of them are bringing dangerous drugs with them.
I can say I understand the need to defend the border and prevent drug smuggling and human trafficking. But I also do not agree with the violent way Governor Abbot is going about it. He has allowed mothers and children to drown in the Rio Grand and the razor wire is just too much. There has to be a better way.
I'm scared for my family. I want them to be safe. I don't want my family going through this. My sister is held down there because of shared custody with an ex.
I always held onto the idea that Texas women would get their abortion rights back eventually. But there's talk about red states seceeding from the blue states. If that happens I don't think that will ever happen. Not in my life time at the very least. Honestly if another civil war happens I can't help but feel that America should stay broken up this way. We are just too different. We will be doomed to repeat this cycle over and over.
Anyways. Sorry to moan about my American problems some of which might not even happen. Thanks for listening.
