Does your name date you to a decade?

I think mine does. Born 1986 and I don't think my name is given to baby girls anymore. It's a one word title of a classic novel.

My name is Louise. Never met anyone called it as a first name apart from a girl in my class in early 70s. I was born 60s but I think it’s pretty timeless.

I'd have thought Louise was born in the late 70s and 80s. Went to school with about a million of them.

And Emma and Sarah

Don't forget David and Craig

Blomdd · 29/01/2024 08:41

I think mine does the opposite. My name was quite rarely used until recently and now there are hundreds of 5 year olds with it!

I was born in 89 and about half the girls at school had the middle name Louise.

Born 1961 and in my school there were a few names used on repeat as almost everyone was named after a granny or aunty. Names like Margaret, Anne, Mary, Kathleen, Catherine, Elizabeth, Helen, Sarah etc. The boys were James, Peter, John, Michael, Joseph, Daniel, Patrick etc. It also was common to have cousins with identical first and second names.

cheapskatemum · 29/01/2024 08:42

Mine appears to be timeless & I often see it on here as a "classic" name suggestion. I have met girls and women from different generations occasionally who share my name. It's not that common. I've never worked with anyone with the same name. There were 5 in my ballet class when I was 5yo though! I was the one hiding in the back row.
For those who like to guess: by changing the last letter from an "a" to an "e", you get a name that was very popular in the 60s, when I was born.
I used to hate my name, but have got used to it now.

OnLockdown · 29/01/2024 08:43

My name was virtually unknown in the UK when I was born but became massively popular about 10 years later and was high in the top 10 in the 80s. It has now dropped to the low 100s.

Its not popular now and yes there were a fair few when I was at school (I'm 45 and know Rebeccas in their 50s) but it's a very classic beautiful name that does not date as such.

It's not like Kevin and Trevor and Nigel and Ian. Knew loads of them at school.

Snap!

Snap as well!

I still get compliments on my name. People think it sounds romantic.

EverleighMay · 29/01/2024 08:44

Yes it does date to a decade but it's not the decade I was born in. Parents pocked a name they liked that happened to be associated with an earlier decade iyswim?

Whatwillbewilbe · 29/01/2024 08:44

@cheapskatemum is it Anna?

@cheapskatemum is it Anna?

No

RandomQuestionOfTheDay · 29/01/2024 08:50

Yes, that’s fine, my face dates me too!

Worse is if you have a name that dates you to a decade before your birth, that makes people assume you’re older than you are.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 29/01/2024 08:50

No. My name unusual and has never been anywhere near the top 100.

Arabaloosa · 29/01/2024 08:51

Urgh, yes! My name is very 80's. I've hated it all my life, but think it's too late to change it now

minipie · 29/01/2024 08:52

Mine dates me to about 10-12 years after I was born. Wonder if people think I’m prematurely aged Hmm

WolfFoxHare · 29/01/2024 08:56

I was born in the late 70s and my name was very fashionable at the time - there were three of us in my class at secondary school alone. It’s not at all fashionable now.

puddypud · 29/01/2024 08:57

No, I was born in the 80's and was made fun of when I was at school (90's) because it was weird or posh, in a sea of Louise and Sarah's. It's now been the top UK girls name, or top 5, for quite some time and all those Louise & Sarah's that made fun of me are calling their babies my name.

MidnightSerenader · 29/01/2024 09:02

My name dates me to the 1900s (I’m named after my grandmother, and a load turned up in the obituaries when I was born apparently, which concerned my parents), or the late 90s / 00s.

I was born in the 70s.

tealweasel · 29/01/2024 09:04

Sort of - where I grew up, there were plenty of girls of my generation (80s - early 90s) with my name. I now live in England, where pretty much everyone I've met with my name has been 50 - 65 or so.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 29/01/2024 09:07

Sort of yes and sort of no. My name is in the bible and has been very popular for decades. It was very popular the year I was born but isn’t a popular name for children these days. So based on my name I could be 30 or 80 years old but I’m not likely to be 5.

TerfTalking · 29/01/2024 09:09

I don’t think so. It’s not a common name buts it’s not unusual and everyone has heard of it but not a traditional classic name either. My cousin has it (mid sixties) I have it (late fifties) a school friend of DS has it (late twenties) a friends daughter has it mid 20s and I see the name sometimes on younger kids sports results pages.

Flatulence · 29/01/2024 09:09

My name was certainly popular in the late 70s/early 80s when I was born. But I've also met plenty of women aged from their 80s to their 20s with my name too... Though the biggest group are certainly women aged 35 to about 45.
I don't think very many girls get given my name any more, so will probably turn into an old lady name in time!
My middle name on the other hand is pretty timeless.

Sdpbody · 29/01/2024 09:10

@PaperwhiteTheFriendlyGhost we share the same 80s name. We had 6 girls in my year of 40 with the name and we all spelt the shortened name differently. I am yet to meet a young one of me. 1987/8/9 would be my guess on your year.
