Bikini Wax - total rookie at 40 - please help with my daft questions!

As the title says…..

Ive got a pretty special holiday coming up and I’ve decided to go for the full Hollywood.

i have a pretty high pain tolerance and have my brows waxed regularly.

Im fair haired and usually veet (all off) once a month and maintain my bikini line with a razor a couple of times a week. However I’ve been plagued by in growing hairs especially on the fupa (I don’t know another term sorry 🤣) it’s not particularly fat!! So I feel like the whole area doesn’t look great and I’m wanting to look my best 😈 and have something that lasts.

Can I ask some silly Qs?

Who best to do it? The lady who
does my nails and brows also does waxing but I’ve been going to her for years and i feel
somewhat awkward??!! Can I look at her while she does my nails when she’s seen my flaps?!! But I do trust she would do it well. Or a new place and then I never NEED to see them again? Is it usual for someone to come for a first time wax and my paranoia tells me they will think I’m an idiot if I don’t know what to ‘do’ (for eg I had my eyebrows threaded at a random place and I had to pull my skin in different areas and i felt like a bit of a knob not knowing what to do). Is any…..participation 🙈 required from me as they wax??!

Next….whats the length of hair they can wax? Is a weeks regrowth after shaving ok? I certainly feel there would be enough to
adhere to…. And what about the ingrown that have caused blocked follicles?

I have a few really random ‘pube like’ hairs on the back of my upper legs. Normal?? The joys of being in 40s. They seem to grow super quick. Not many of them but I want rid. Can I ask them to quickly wax this area too? Don’t otherwise want my legs waxed as my hair is fair and I’m totally fine with shaving when I have a shower.

If you’ve read all of this then thank you and would love your help

yours truly
awkward waxing virgin

I have a wax every 4 weeks and have done so for about 15 years now. I go to the same person who I now consider a friend. She also does my nails!

Get recommendations.
Go to someone who uses warm wax in a pot.

At mine I strip off completely but some don't. You lie on your back usually knees pointing outwards. Then knees to chest. Sometimes on all fours to get the back all sorted.
A wipe over with some aloe Vera gel and off you go.
Mine takes about 10 mins, if that.

1 weeks regrowth wouldn't be enough on me. But I've waxed for years now. 3-4 weeks is perfect gap.

SylvanianFrenemies · 28/01/2024 23:39

A week isn't enough. At least 3, preferably 4.
If you feel comfortable with your current person, go with her. It helps to have someone relaxed and matter of fact. The woman who does mine is lovely, and great at directing things!
Echo what is said above about making sure it is proper wax from a pot, not strip wax.

Really helpful, thank you esp re the waxing types, will avoid the strip wax. She uses fabric and hot wax for brows so presume the same. I think I can get to 2 weeks for Fupa (I really need to learn the proper word for that place) but further down will be 3-4 so hopefully better.

I feel like such a naive idiot!! Was in a sexless marriage for years and now back out there but I feel 21 again in some respects!

the thought of getting into those positions scares me 🙈 oh jeez the indignity of legs akimbo and bending over so she can do the butt 🤯 I think I will go to somewhere other than my regular therapist but will ask for local recs.

I wonder how many ‘newbies’ they see? Weirdly I am totally fine with any medical stuff down there but I am really stressing over this!

OP, as you are someone who is what l would term as “medically relaxed”, you’ll be fine. I agree with the comments up thread. In addition you can expect some responses from the “MN Pubic Hair Police” saying you are evil and worse.

l’ve been all off since my mid to late teens, now in my 40s. Looking at my naked self in the mirror, l can’t remember what l look like with pubic hair.

Not all waxers are the same, so I’m afraid it’s trial and (sometimes) error, so unless a friend can recommend someone, you are probably best off with the person who does your nails, unless it’s a fly by night nail bar.

Some further thoughts which may help.

  • The first time is the worst, after that the body seems to get used to it. ‘Suggest a couple of paracetamol first. That said it is not agony.
  • Some places offer paper knickers and work round them, or even say to keep your on. It’s all a bit of a waste of time and if you keep your own on they can get ruined.
  • Emphasise it’s your first (although she’ll know that) and be guided. Personally l just turn up, knickers off and hop on the table.
  • l would suggest 2 weeks growth for starters, but speak to them when you make the appointment.
  • Only go for hot wax.
  • For the first time at least, don’t have sex the same day, it can be uncomfortable.
  • Be guided by them on next appointment, but l would think around every 4 weeks.
  • Finally do not get done immediately before a period when pain sensitivity seems to be at the highest.

And remember, she has seen it all before; it is quite likely a friend in the same beauticians does hers!

As everyone else says.

I have a low pain threshold so I take painkillers before.

I'm every 4 weeks usually. I also use a scrub lightly to prevent in growing hairs.

I feel more clean when hairless, although I know that's just me. Prefer for receiving orally too.

Not everyone dies Hollywood though it requires extra training so check carefully.

Don't worry about legs out and all seen, they are used to it. It's just a woman's body.

My partner does mine. I have a very large floppy fupa so needs both hands on! I just hold my belly up while she gives me the treatment! Hey! I like to feel cute down there!

removing my post as I got two posters confused and responded to the wrong one.
