How bad is it that an 8 year old can’t spell ‘come’?

My child is year 3, passed the SATS last year (even I was shocked at that!). I tried to raise the quality of their handwriting and spelling at parents evening, only to be told they are ‘average’ and ‘not the worst’.

Tonight they wrote a note where ‘come’ was spelt ‘cumb’.

Should I push further or are they just ‘average’?!

Standards are low in Junior school.

Why not help at home instead - play games with words and spellings - put up passwords for things he can’t spell! This works a treat!!
Display the word, try twinkl for print outs or letters and sounds and work through the basic 200 words -

you can do more at home then they can do at school.

How much do you do at home with your DC?

Picking out one word and asking 'how bad is it?' doesn't really solve anything.

Why were you shocked they passed their SATS?

I was shocked they passed as I was told they were likely not to on the spag paper.

They were moved down a spelling group so I have been adding extra words in from the year 2 spelling list.

They had extra help up until the SATS and then it stopped as soon as the SATS took place.

I will have a look on Twinkl for some spelling sheets.
