Help needed for teen ds BO

My poor almost 13yr old is really suffering with stinky pits.

He showers every day and applies triple dry deodrant after and then applies a standard mens long lasting one in the morning and a stick version after PE. We've tried nivea, sure, Mitchum etc but nothing is working. I picked him up at lunchtime for an appointment this week and he was already smelly even though he'd not had PE.

It's definitely not his clothes, I'm a pro at stinky boys clothes now.

Before I try the gp us there anything else I can try?

I have found that shower gel is actually far less effective than solid soap. Buy some plain bar soap and tell him to thoroughly wash his armpits with that.

If he's already using solid soap, then I'm out of ideas!

Comedycook · 27/01/2024 20:14

Also going to ask like the pp what is he using to wash with? Bar soap is better than shower gel for bo.

Comedycook · 27/01/2024 20:15

And is he definitely using anti perspirant and not just deodorant?

Cheeesus · 27/01/2024 20:16

Have you tried the 72hr men’s sure roll on?

And soap.

If so, might be time for Perspirex etc but they are quite hard core.

soupmaker · 27/01/2024 20:17

Have you supervised him in the shower and actually putting on deodorant?

I need to stand over my DD2 to make sure she's actually washed properly. I make her use bar soap, much more effective than shower gel and a roll on deodorant.

SwordToFlamethrower · 27/01/2024 20:39

Get driclor from boots.

It temporarily kills sweat glands and is powerful and brilliant.

orangeoctupus · 27/01/2024 20:41

Triple Dry.

Put it on at night after a shower.
It says you don't need to use other deodorants the next day, but I tend to.

isthewashingdryyet · 27/01/2024 20:44

Bar soap and a face flannel to actually scrub at the underarm area. May need a clean flannel every day.

I also would be actually asking him to demonstrate exactly how he washed and applied antiperspirant

BlackBirdsArePoliteWarnings · 27/01/2024 20:45

Get him some exfoliating mitts to put on when he showers to really exfoliate the pits with soap. Sometimes I think they just go in and splash water on themselves.

BlackBirdsArePoliteWarnings · 27/01/2024 20:49

@BlackBirdsArePoliteWarnings or exfoliating gloves. Tesco do them fairly cheap. I prefer those to mitts tbh. Good luck!

Couldyounot · 27/01/2024 20:50

Might be worth trying a bar of Shield (yes, it still exists). Always used to work well in our experience

NorthernPoppetPrincess · 27/01/2024 20:52

I second the Driclor. Strong but brilliant. Wish I’d have known about it though my very sweaty teen years! Saved my sanity as an adult! I also use Mitchum roll on.

HippeePrincess · 27/01/2024 20:53

Try showering in the morning as well as at night, proper soap.
Otherwise you could look at his diet?

NothingToday1 · 27/01/2024 20:55

The only antiperspirant that works for my son is a L'Oréal mens one. Any others and he stinks.

Supervised a 13 yo in the shower?!

Alwaysalwayscold · 27/01/2024 20:57

When he washes is he using any sort of flannel/cloth/sponge? If he's just using his hands he's probably not scrubbing well enough

Octavia64 · 27/01/2024 21:00

Dettol antibacterial soap and a flannel.

Won't solve it but will help massively,

soupmaker · 27/01/2024 21:01

@Lemonyyellow Yep. Mine would happily stand in the shower for 10 minutes washing nothing then hop out. Can be done while ensuring modesty remains intact. Had to teach mine at that age to scrub properly.

DoIHaveToBeAnAdult · 27/01/2024 21:20

For bar soap, try Sainsbury's Tea Tree Oil soap.

BlanketSky · 27/01/2024 21:25

Bar soap and flannel, shouting instructions (now reminders) to wash properly through the bathroom door and Sure antiperspirant stick (not roll on) have helped this issue with my 13yo DS

Worriedmotheroftwo · 27/01/2024 21:46

I had this as a teen. It was mortifying. It's a medical condition, and normal deodorant was useless. The only thing I used that worked was Driclor from Boots. Changed my life!

This would have been useless for me. I desperately tried anything and everything to stop the sweat! It was awful knowing my parents just thought I wasn't washing and using deodorant properly!

TheSnakeCharmer · 27/01/2024 21:50

You could try procoal deodorant. We've found it to be pretty effective and a jar lasts a long time.

Beamur · 27/01/2024 21:51

Bar soap.
DD has switched to a stick one from a local shop. Some kind of 'natural deodorant ' brand called Ku-tis and it's remarkably good.
