Help needed for teen ds BO

My poor almost 13yr old is really suffering with stinky pits.

He showers every day and applies triple dry deodrant after and then applies a standard mens long lasting one in the morning and a stick version after PE. We've tried nivea, sure, Mitchum etc but nothing is working. I picked him up at lunchtime for an appointment this week and he was already smelly even though he'd not had PE.

It's definitely not his clothes, I'm a pro at stinky boys clothes now.

Before I try the gp us there anything else I can try?

Get some hibiscrub and leave it on a little while before washing off. Sorted my DDs stinky pits.

WeirdPookah · 28/01/2024 09:53

Seconding using Shield soap. I have always used it and nothing leaves me feeling as fresh and clean as that does.

Sodndashitall · 28/01/2024 09:59

This is pretty common with teen boys ime.
One problem is that they don't know how to wash properly (yes really!) And a quick smear of some bodywash just doesn't cut it anymore. Needs to be proper washing, maybe show him (clothed) how to really scrub inside pits

The other thing is that his clothes won't stop smelling with normal wash if they've gotten really bad. I found that I needed to do dettol laundry rinse on all the boys clothes washes and for some items (gym clothes) they need soaking too. I found school shirts and blazer especially a nightmare. So if he's sticking a shirt into a stinky balzer that may also not helping. I steam clean blazers every other week and then send to dry cleaners every hols.

Finally I'd second the more medical type anti perspiration. Hopefully all this works

Might be something he's eaten as well

Seas164 · 28/01/2024 11:38

Another vote for got to get in there with some bar soap and a flannel, scrubby mits, or similar. Double scrub, a thorough rinse, and try the antiperspirants mentioned. If he's not washing properly no deodorant is going to save the situation, and waving a bit of shower gel in there isn't washing properly.

Blanketpolicy · 28/01/2024 11:43

Is he showering at night, can he do it in the morning instead? Ds gets really hot at night and would stink too if he didnt shower in the morning.

He showers in the morning and can get a little whiffy by evening but not noticably unless up really close.

idontlikealdi · 28/01/2024 11:50

Is he actually washing his pits?

nicky2512 · 28/01/2024 11:53

Another vote for driclor. Ds used to be so sweaty and his blazer needed washed all the time. Driclor did the trick. Now only uses it once a week and in between uses normal strong cream (sure I think).

Hohofortherobbers · 28/01/2024 12:27

Shield soap on a coarse flannel, scrub!

SunnieShine · 28/01/2024 12:30

And shave under his arms.

ollypollymolly · 28/01/2024 12:31

Dettol antibacterial soap - this !

Mirrormeback · 28/01/2024 12:36

He needs to use a bar of soap Not Dove (it's too moisturising for pits)

Then he should use either Mitchum spray or Mitchum stick deodorant

Shower gel just doesn't work well at removing old antiperspirant and BO

I learnt this on MN years ago

It's a game changer

We use a plain Tesco or Waitrose soap or a nicer one from TK Maxx they do nice sets of 3

Mull · 28/01/2024 12:37

My first reaction to this was “how odd for a male to have to shave” which is utter social programming - I shave mine mainly for hygiene so why wouldn’t a male?!

Sorry, that’s in reply to @SunnieShine

Mirrormeback · 28/01/2024 12:44

These Mitchum

Bar soap used on armpits daily in the shower-really thoroughly
good stick deodorant
wash clothes using Dettol laundry sanitiser
wash bedding regularly
wash coat/blazer

ditalini · 28/01/2024 12:52

Definitely bar soap and a good scrub. Shower gel is useless for old deodorant and sweat build up.

He can shave if he wants as it'll make it slightly easier to make sure he's cleaning right down to the skin, but if he's scrubbing properly with soap and applying his antiperspirant correctly it won't make a difference (from experience).

If he's using a spray make sure he's actually applying it to his armpits and not giving a vague spray in the general area.

Nonplusultra · 28/01/2024 12:54

I know you said you’re an expert at stinky clothes but I’ve found that dd gets much stinkier in sports fabrics than in natural fabrics.

I think it might be that sports t shirts are designed to wick sweat away from the body so they’re stuck in the fabric and stink.

ds’ PE gear is smelly too but he wears bamboo and cotton fabrics at home they smell ok.

menopausalmare · 28/01/2024 12:54

Maybe try hibiscrub.

SeaToSki · 28/01/2024 12:59

Bar soap.

wash rinse then repeat for armpits, groin and feet

dry properly in all those areas (are you sure he doesnt have a skin yeast infection as they can get funky smelling)

anti perspirant of choice (lots of good recommendations above)

no fabrics next to the skin with artificial fibers, so add a plain white cotton t shirt under school shirt, and cotton underwear

give it a week, if it doesnt improve spin past the GP

Paw2024 · 28/01/2024 13:07

Bear with me as it sounds involved but it works

Shower - use dettol bar soap under arms, let it sit for a minute and really work it in with an exfoliating glove or mitt. Or a benzoyl peroxide wash

Wipe glycolic acid on armpits and let them dry

Apply this at night, I don't need anything then in the morning but you could use a spray if needed

Sure Maximum Protection Clean Scent Anti-perspirant Cream Stick 6 pack 96h protection deodorant for 3x stronger* sweat protection 45 ml amzn.eu/d/1oCypXa

emmaempenadas · 28/01/2024 13:17

Wash and wipe over his arm pits with alcohol. Then apply a deodorant stick like Mitchum.

BodyKeepingScore · 28/01/2024 13:18

soupmaker · 27/01/2024 20:17

Have you supervised him in the shower and actually putting on deodorant?

I need to stand over my DD2 to make sure she's actually washed properly. I make her use bar soap, much more effective than shower gel and a roll on deodorant.

At 13!?!

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/01/2024 13:18

Second Detrol soap.
