Watching Traitors and genuinely wondering why people think women are more emotional than men

I'm watching season 1 (no spoilers please).

I don't think that being emotional is necessarily a bad thing.

And perhaps the contestants on one season of a gameshow are not a statistically significant sample size...

But observing the men and women on the show, the men are far more emotional. They cry, they get angry, they are excitable, they sulk, they form close bonds, they trust, they are gutted when betrayed. The women are far more dispassionate and able to respond rather than react.

If I were an alien observing the human race via season 1 of Traitors my field notes would show that men were by far more emotional than women.

You are not wrong. Women are able to control their emotions much better than men in my experience. We have been sold a lie that women are more highly emotional. Who gets angry more easily? Who gets into more fights? Yes women feel they are allowed to cry more easily but it doesn't mean they are more emotional.

Snuggleyou · 26/01/2024 22:54

A lot of men don’t believe anger is an emotion.

Elvanseshortage · 26/01/2024 23:08

Totally agree! Yes, for some reason anger isn’t counted as an emotion, only the ‘Feminine’ emotions are.

The same goes for the idea that women are ‘hormonal’, which is stupid snd doesn’t actually make sense biologically. BOTH men and women have hormones and they fluctuate for everyone. Testosterone is a hormone and men are prone to surges of it. I remember reading a while ago that young boys of reception age have surges of testosterone which makes them prone to hyperactivity. I guess that’s a bit simplistic since women have testosterone too. Basically we are all ‘hormonal’ from time to time and yet it’s something that only women are accused of. Men are apparently more in charge of their behaviour. Except that they’re not. Obviously.

A television show isn’t the same as real life…

Watch the final of Season 2 and get back to us.

It's literally a masterclass in idiotic female emotion.

AppleKatie · 26/01/2024 23:13

I just did.

I saw a trained soldier use emotional manipulation.

i saw a grown man sulk and get in his own head to the extent that he wasn’t able to clearly articulate his correct assumptions.

i saw a woman cry. And another one stoically and passively accept her fate.

doesnt really scream women are more emotional than men.

JessicasLavalier · 26/01/2024 23:15

Are you joking? She made a stupid and illiogical decision contrary to all intelligent thinking without analysis because she was emotionally involved with a man who was clearly grooming and manipulating her. It was an embarrasment.

Agreed, also testosterone spikes during our period which coincides with the time of month some men like to shame us for being emotional. I think that says everything really.

Elvanseshortage · 26/01/2024 23:24

@JessicasLavalier agreed the 2nd series had a lot of very stereotypical gendered behaviour on show. But OP is talking about series 1, which was quite different in that respect and good evidence for the idea that some women can be as cool, calm snd ‘emotionless’ as men.

Logainm · 26/01/2024 23:24

In my experience, women are in general far more emotionally well-regulated than men.

clear to us watching at home on an edited tv show. Try for a bit of empathy!

I don’t think the actions of one (admittedly a bit dim) woman, embarrass women as a whole.

Do you apply that standard to men?

And you don’t think having spent the past two weeks holed up with a small group of people constantly being caught up in psychological games might have impacted her judgement.

2 weeks? More like 8 weeks at least. Paul left around halfway through and he said he was there for 3 weeks.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/01/2024 09:30

Agreed. You only have to watch men on the football pitch to see the truth of the matter.

Zonic · 27/01/2024 09:32

I think men let stuff go and move on quicker than women .

I think men gaslight/emotionally manipulate and pretend not to know what women are telling them when women raise issues.
