Has anybody had haggis this week ?

Or at any other time ? Admittedly it's a delicacy I've never tried, whether traditional or vegetarian but I'm interested to know if haggis has much reach into Mumsnetville.

I don't remember Burns Night (or Week) being an event in the hospitality calendar until the last decade or so. Then again, I'm in Yorkshire so I expect it's different in Scotland. It's a way for the trade to start making some post-Christmas brass in the traditionally lean month of January.

Jolly good. Glad to see it's a tradition well observed. Is it frowned upon to serve haggis with any side dishes other than tatties and neeps? Obviously what happens in one's own home is one's own business, so haggis and chips/rice/pasta may yet be served.

It's nice on a toasted panini with cheese or on a roll with a tattie scone and fried egg. Quite often served in a fry up in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

My hubby has his haggis neeps & tatties at least once a fortnight, last was Thursday night past (Burns). I'll have it occasionally with chicken (Chicken Balmoral, haggis stuffed chicken breast with whisky cream sauce) but the kids hate it.

Born in England moved to Scotland aged 10. Used to eat haggis regularly, now eat veggie haggis regularly, had it for lunch and dinner on Thursday. Usually buy one and cut it into 4 to freeze, makes a quick, easy meal.

Always haggis, neeps and tatties on Burns night….but we have haggis at other times throughout the year.

Haggis is hard to find so far as I know.

I once bought a can of it from Asda but that was so rank!I

Authentic decent haggis is really delicious.

mindutopia · 27/01/2024 10:32

Hoping to have it tomorrow as had to work on Thursday evening. But haven’t been able to find a haggis at the shops! Going to go on another search today otherwise don’t know what we’ll do as you can’t really swap in something else, nothing is like haggis!

We usually have it maybe 2x a year, not regularly but not just for Burns night. I quite like it.

Ocado still has stock. Just ordered some for my freezer!

Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, sell it in Wales. It freezes well. There will be a shortage now because people bought it for Burns night.
I buy four at a time and freeze

TheTecknician · 29/12/2024 11:18

These will be back once more in just under a month's time. Do you have to pre-order or is supply not an issue? I'm not partaking, BTW, but I know lots of Scots and others will.

I’m hoping haggis will be back in Tesco/ Sainsbury’s soon - they stopped stocking it to fit in all the beige Christmas crap, which is a shame because DS (picky eater) loves it.

Mairzydotes · 30/12/2024 16:19

Morrisons have them in store today.

Togetheragain45 · 26/01/2025 22:57

I had haggis for the first time tonight. (I'm from Yorkshire and no Scottish connections). Thankfully it came with mash, carrots and gravy but it was still awful. DH loved it, but I just couldn't stomach it. Never again.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/01/2025 22:58

Haggis for tea last night and left overs again tonight.
Love it.
