Has anybody had haggis this week ?

Or at any other time ? Admittedly it's a delicacy I've never tried, whether traditional or vegetarian but I'm interested to know if haggis has much reach into Mumsnetville.

I don't remember Burns Night (or Week) being an event in the hospitality calendar until the last decade or so. Then again, I'm in Yorkshire so I expect it's different in Scotland. It's a way for the trade to start making some post-Christmas brass in the traditionally lean month of January.

3x this week! This is enough, although tempted to try with beans.Grin

stop it ! bloody beans

When I was a student the student union sometimes used to serve haggis neeps and tatties for lunch. Everything was served with ice cream scoops so you got a plate with two haggis domes, two potato domes and one turnip dome on a plate. Very surreal presentation.

My school did that. Loved it served like that!

Often have haggis (Scottish heritage) but I was too busy and didn’t have time to go to the big Sainsbury’s in Camden, which is where I source Simon Howie haggis.
I had veggie haggis at a friend’s house last week.

You won't regret it I promise.

Scottish living in England
Made a once a year trip To wetherspoons today for some haggis neeps and tatties
Also going to have it Sunday with the kids

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 26/01/2024 20:55

Yep, had it yesterday, along with cranachan for pudding. Going to a ceilidh tomorrow so hopefully have it again then!

Ifailed · 26/01/2024 20:56

Yes, but forget just how filling it is, especially with mashed spuds and swede.

Can't stand the whisky sauce though.

Sliced haggis a common Scottish breakfast ingredient and haggis ( in batter) with chips is a cup shop regular item. Also, as others have said, , it's often an ingredient or accompaniment in other dishes. Haggis and steak pies from the bakers!

I really miss a chip shop haggis supper. No chance of that in Berkshire 🤣.

soundsys · 26/01/2024 21:00

Yep! Well veggie haggis. Twice this week: once with neeps and tatties and then in a toastie 😋

I'm Scottish but not in Scotland and I'm lucky to have not one but two Scottish cafes/delis nearby 😁

MoiraRoseVibes · 26/01/2024 21:01

We had the Simon Howie veggie haggis last night with neeps and tatties. Was so nice! Normally have the Macsweens veg one but that was the one they had in Morrisons and it was nicer, I thought.
It’s such a plain but comforting and delicious meal!
We also had whisky sauce which we don’t usually but it was really good.
English living in England but married to a Scot.
Might try haggis with a roast dinner as someone suggested above soon. Such good winter food!

Malarandras · 26/01/2024 21:03

I’m Scottish, always lived in Scotland and I never eat haggis as it is horrible. I also know a lot of Scottish folk and they never eat it either.

cloudyday18jan · 26/01/2024 21:05

Yes, and I'll have it again tomorrow.

Hesleepswiththefishes · 26/01/2024 21:05

yes it’s delicious but a lot of fat so it’s a treat!

definitely have to try it…it’s not like black pudding which I hate

Walking2024now24days · 26/01/2024 21:06

I'm vegetarian. A few years ago a friend & I did a trip around Scotland I had vegetarian haggis at every opportunity!! Approx 20 times anyone was different!

im contemplating another trip... just for the haggis!!

TheTecknician · 26/01/2024 21:06

I never imagined haggis to be such a versatile food. Curried and breakfast haggis etc. How do MacSween and Simon Howie make money from February to December?

I wonder if black pudding, or black and white pudding, is as popular in Scotland as it is in northern England? Again, I've never tried it. Prince Philip was a fan and insisted it should be fried rather than boiled.

I work in a school so had it yesterday for Burns Night and then also had haggis nachos today which is a fairly regular Friday night dinner at our house.

sliced haggis and a fried egg Is lovely.

WesterChick · 26/01/2024 21:10

I've never read anything more Mumsnet than making a haggis and chickpea curry with the leftovers

AgnesX · 26/01/2024 21:11

Yep but I live in Glasgow. With neeps, and tatties it's cheap, filling and actually quite comforting when it's cold with a glass of red wine 😄

soundsys · 26/01/2024 21:18

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/01/2024 20:28

I want one of these 🤣

Oh got very excited there for a minute! They should totally make this for real!

TheShellBeach · 26/01/2024 21:20

Haggis is glorious and we eat it every week.

DiveBombingSeagull · 26/01/2024 21:21

A friend with a Scottish husband did a ponced up Burns supper (she is a pretty good cook) and served haggis neeps and tatties stacked in circles, with a whisky cream sauce, (not great description, but looked amazing) a bit like this even those dubious about haggis were raving about it.

Starter was salmon mousse on butteries, pud was cranachan.
