Been ripped off and trying to get over it

I’m so pissed off and angry with myself I can’t sleep or stop thinking about it.

Total first world problems.

Hit a pot hole yesterday morning, do a google for local mobile tyre replacement company. One comes up and I ring them and I ask if they are local to nearest town and they say yes.
They say it will be 60-90 minutes and it’s 198£. Which I don’t have but I’m stuck and need to get to work.
I pay. They say they will call me back.
30 or so minutes later, no call so I call and they say fitter hasn’t accepted job.
237 then gets removed from my account.
I call them back and say why 237, and she says they added vat, and that they told me this at the time of quoting but they didn’t.
its now an hour and a half later and still no call or updated eta.
I call to cancel and she says I can’t. There will be a 98 plus vat cancellation fee. The fitter hasn’t left yet. But the company owner says he’s left and is 20 mins away. An hour passes. I call back. He’s 10 minutes away an apparently.
Fitter arrives 5 hours after initial call and another 30 mins after I was told it would be 10 minutes. He has come 50 miles and only accepted the job at 12pm, 3 hours after my initial call. He tells me the company just ring around to get the cheapest possible quote and send them to job. The initial 60 min estimate is just bullshit.

I’ve since read reviews of the company (I know, I know, I wish I’d checked!!) and all the reviews say the same as me, no mention of vat, hours later, not letting people cancel.

I’m so pissed off with myself and can’t afford this money. Happy of course to pay for a reasonable and transparent service but I feel ripped off.

just had to get it out. I don’t know how I can fight this, or if I can. Just feels unjust.

I completely understand your rage.

I'd join the clamour on Trustpilot/Google [other review sites are available] and tell EVERYONE I know to never use that company.

Like everyone else, I hate being ripped off. If I had to get into debt to do it, I'd be doubly enraged and feel the situation was unjust.

FortofPud · 25/01/2024 04:28

Oh no! Did you pay on credit card? Dispute the charge f you did.

myladybelle · 25/01/2024 04:31

Dispute the charge for sure !

VioletPickles · 25/01/2024 04:33

Thanks all, paid by debit card. I should have thought!
Fully intend to add my reviews to trust pilot and google but I suspect they won’t give a shit. Already found the directors names on companies house (they refused to give me them over the phone??

I just hate companies acting like dicks for the sake of a quick buck.

Hope you got invoice

Mambo19866 · 25/01/2024 07:45

I would say this comes under misleading selling practises and advertised prices must include any fees and taxes. I would get in touch with Citizens Advise.

sandgrown · 25/01/2024 07:48

Try Trading Standards as it sounds dodgy practice.

VioletPickles · 25/01/2024 07:56

Got a receipt emailed - they sent it before they’d managed to subcontract a tyre fitter. Still fuming 😂

Trading standards, I'm sure only business to business prices can be discussed excluding vat. All other quotes have to include it.

Lawnmowerweedslayer · 25/01/2024 09:18

How about buying AA or RAC breakdown cover, it would probably be cheaper

gamerchick · 25/01/2024 09:23

Might be wise to get some sort of AA cover, the peace of mind is worth it.

As for this company. I've seen success when they've been named and shamed on scammer groups on SM. They don't like that and may refund you if you take the post down.

Elephantsareace · 25/01/2024 11:31

Not much help to you now, but I was in a similar situation last year and found all the small business fitters giving ridiculous quotes. Halfords do a mobile service much cheaper.

Can you recommend any groups? I can only seem to see crypto scam groups on Fb

and thank you all for replying and offering advice x

Be wary
some companies will charge you up to £300 extra as they class it as an accident not a breakdown

rwalker · 17/05/2024 18:22

£237 in a lot of money but tyres are £80 plus then them coming out to you
for someone to come out to you and fit Mobile just for that service part of it I would say £80 so I would expect to pay at least £160 minimum for tyre and fitting

I’d say you have been ripped off and received shocking service but not ripped off massively if that softens the blow

Lovelynames123 · 17/05/2024 18:26

That's an extortionate amount, what kind of tyre?! I had a tyre fitted recently, mobile but arranged the day before, and it was £125 for a Continental.

Mellowautumnmists · 17/05/2024 18:54

Make a claim against the local council responsible for the pot hole. I've just done this successfully in my area. Go on their website and there'll be a link to this sort of claim.
