Thread 12 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 11).

The days are gradually growing longer, but the worst of the winter weather is not yet behind us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I hope your humours are as they should be @NoBinturongsHereMate (and that you have a sufficiency of snacks).

MouseMinge · 17/03/2024 20:14

Phew re retinas. That must be a relief. I hope your humours are positive. No black bile! I hope they get to the bottom of it soon.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 17/03/2024 20:21

I have all the snacks. Including a tin of sweetcorn.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 17/03/2024 21:28

Humours declared in balance. Packed off home with a prescription for leeches.

Gonners · 17/03/2024 22:29

BP meds? I occasionally get exciting (for some value of exciting which = quite tedious) migraine-style flashy lights in my peripheral vision. No pain, though. A couple of soluble aspirin (on top of my standard BP meds), combined with 15 minutes flat out in a darkened room, usually does the job. It's really very annoying, though, if you're not at home.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 17/03/2024 22:49

Yes, BP ones. And a referral to the consultant who likes hypertension puzzles.

Kucinghitam · 18/03/2024 10:04

What a scare @NoBinturongsHereMate, I'm so glad they sorted it out and you have leeches.

My cousin had that retina-falling-off thing several years ago, there was emergency surgery and the like, but they couldn't save his retinas.

Retina-falling-off sounds horrible. What causes it to happen?

IIRC it's generally caused by changes to the vitreous humour inside the eyeball. Can be associated with ageing.

My cousin had it in his early 30s - a big risk factor is severe shortsightedness (which he had).

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 18/03/2024 11:10

Thanks, Kuc, I had no idea but bodies are strange things.

I'm extremely long sighted so should be okay.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/03/2024 11:27

Bungee jumping is another risk factor. Not that I really need additional excuses not to do that. I've always felt that flinging yourself head first off a high platform with an elastic band round your ankles comes under the same category as 'I'm not jumping out of a perfectly good plane'. If there's nothing wrong with the ground, I'm not going to launch myself off it.

SqueakyDinosaur · 18/03/2024 13:21

"Vitreous humour" has a wonderfully medieval feel to it, doesn't it?

BP meds?

I thought that I'd posted something over the last couple of days and forgotten it. I've just started BP medication, I did a 24 hour ambulatory monitoring, on Saturday / Sunday. It's down by 35 points systolic and 5 diastolic.

I'm pissed off, as they passed me for offshore 2 years ago with similar readings, but now want 2 weeks of daily readings and I'm due offshore in 2 weeks....

Yesterday morning, the cuff inflated and my wife sat bolt upright, cuffed my shoulder and snapped, "What the HELL are you doing?" She hadn't noticed it going off every hour, on the hour, overnight!

Britinme · 19/03/2024 16:28

@SinnerBoy - I've just got a resistance inhaler from Amazon. My friend, whose blood pressure shot in alarmingly, got one on the advice of her doctor and it's already reduced hers by 9 points. I'm on BO meds too

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/03/2024 17:22

Nine points? Pah! I'm down 56 points systolic and 12 diastolic since Sunday. At this rate the puzzle for the consultant to solve will be 'Why are you in my office?'

(Seriously, though, sounds interesting - I'll look into it. If I can get google to recognise the question instead of trying to make me read about inhaler resistance in asthma.)

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/03/2024 17:29

Ah, found something: average 9mmHg drop with a 30 breaths twice a day regime.

Going to take a while for me though, I'm a very slow breather.

MouseMinge · 19/03/2024 19:57

I haven't seen and didn't know about it, @duc748 but it looks interesting.

Gonners · 19/03/2024 20:28

That looks like a fun evening, @duc748 Another one I rather fancy the idea of is Sarah Snook's one-woman show at the Haymarket in which she plays all the roles (26 of them) in The Picture of Dorian Gray. Bonkers. We had lunch with my quite exceptionally dull elder son-out-law + wife and son today and they're going to see it tomorrow. Such a waste of tickets!

duc748 · 19/03/2024 20:33

Unfortunately I can't make Thursday or Friday this week. I was hoping it might be on for a bit longer, but I daresay there are other venues.

MouseMinge · 19/03/2024 21:37

I'd love to see The Picture of Dorian Gray, it's had fantastic reviews across the board. I'd love to go and see it but I'm not sure how long it's running for and I'm not fit for theatre at the moment. I think the tickets are pretty expensive too but someone on the thread has to go and see it and then make us all feel green with envy as they tell us how utterly fabulous it was!

Britinme · 19/03/2024 22:08

I see I wrote BO meds in my previous post. I would like to assure the thread that I am not stinky enough to need medication. I meant, of course, BP meds. You can all come back now.

SinnerBoy · 19/03/2024 23:46

Dunno what's going on with mine. 15 minutes after a 45 minute cycle, I was 120/97. Tonight, I was 160/80.

I think I need more vigorous exercise.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/03/2024 23:53

<removes peg from nose, and sniff cautiously>

MouseMinge · 20/03/2024 21:04

The weather was beautiful here today and I felt almost well for the first day since Saturday. Maybe it was the sun what did it?

I had the back door open for the second time this year (first was on Saturday when I had a couple of friends over, one of whom I met on the bus on the way to our first day at secondary school). I noticed a big weed in my jasmine pot and decided to remove it. I was pulling at it and the leaves were coming off so I decided to sort of dig down with my hands. The roots went nearly all the way down. Weeds are mental little buggers when they put their minds to it. This was an ugly weed so it had to go. The jamsine pot and the honeysuckle pot both have a bit of moss in, teeny tiny clovers and teeny tiny daisies. These of course get to stay because they look lovely. No weeds at all in my rose pot. There's interesting information that nobody needed!
