Is your year 5/6 child newly obsessed with all things ‘skincare’ ??

My year 6 child is absolutely obsessed, it’s come about in the last month. It’s all she talks about and spends hours on the Sephora website.

Apparently this is a ‘thing’ at the moment in this age group.

Is this the same in your house and where did this come from? Everything she wants is ££££!

Shes on TikTok seeing it

BrondesburyBelle · 24/01/2024 21:04

No. I don’t let her on the internet though. She has a phone but no browser.

GaroTheMushroom · 24/01/2024 21:04

Nope

TikTok

10 year old girls obsessed with Drunk Elephant and mini fridges to store their skincare in. It's bizarre. They all have flawless peachy skin anyway.

Meredusoleil · 24/01/2024 21:07

My Y10 dd1 is, but not Drunk Elephant. It's more of an 'everything must have spf in it' obsession tbh.

frizzyandfrazzled · 24/01/2024 21:10

Yes it's a thing. It's tik tok. We have bought the odd thing that is more reasonably priced - the excitement of spending their pocket money at Sephora is real.

My girls like simple (as in the brand) stuff too which you can pick up for much less. It's just a phase/craze.

mindutopia · 24/01/2024 21:12

Yes, it’s because her silly friend lives on TikTok. She gets whatever crap I buy her from Tesco though.

AlwaysColdHands · 24/01/2024 21:12

I can hardly get my yr 5 DD to be bothered about washing her face. I think this is a good few years away for us (hopefully)

Jessforless · 24/01/2024 21:12

Yes! Drunk elephant and the mini fridge are what she spent her Christmas money on.

The prices are eye watering, I could definitely do with it for my not 10 year old skin and I could never justify the cost!

Erm no she's definitely a million miles away from this! 🤣

Itmwtoty · 24/01/2024 21:16

No. She knows there are a couple of girls in her class who are. She thinks it's daft. It is absolutely to do with tiktok/ YouTube but also about who her friends are and what they see as important. My 10 year old has Internet access but uses it to check football scores and watch art tutorials. It's not as simple as just Internet access, look at why she thinks how her skin looks is so important.

ichundich · 24/01/2024 21:16

Same here although my DD is slightly older. She recently came to her senses a bit when she developed dyshidrotic eczema on her hands - probably as a result of all the different products she was using!

XelaM · 24/01/2024 21:19

Yes my 13-year-old has been into expensive skincare for years. I don't think it's that bad to want to take care of your skin🤷‍♀️ I had terrible acne but my daughter has lovely clear skin. Maybe it's because she takes such good care of it.

Curtainpoles · 24/01/2024 21:37

Yes mine is, she's 9. She doesn't have a phone or tiktok, I think it's her friends, possibly YouTube videos as well.
She didn't get any Drunk Elephant stuff for Christmas. The prices!! I did buy her Nivea Soft which is what I use 😁
She also wanted some expensive cleanser by a company carried Byoma which I'd never heard of. She bought that with her Christmas money.

NotMyDayJob · 24/01/2024 21:40

No my 6 year old absolutely isn't. And she's not on Tik Tok either. Bloody hell.

drowningintinsel · 24/01/2024 21:42

Yes!!!! Bubble, myoma, drunk elephant! I can't believe the costs!

TheHennaHairedHarridan · 24/01/2024 21:42

I can barely get my year 6 to wash...

Oh I miss read this as a 6 year old, not yr 6 🤣 i have heard this is a thing. It's probably better than getting into make up to be honest

RightOnTheEdge · 24/01/2024 21:43

No, my daughter is a bit older but has no interest in this.

My relative's daughter is 9 though and her grandmother bought her £150 worth of skincare for Christmas because that's what she asked for.
It's mind boggling to me.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 24/01/2024 21:45

My Yr6 dd is, and she loves makeup. Will spend hours practising looks. But all types. So dramatic, Halloween etc, as well as just flawless pretty.

she has fairly basic skincare (so simple, soap & glory, Nivea etc). She enjoys it.

Beetlebumz · 24/01/2024 21:46

Sad that 10 year olds are so obsessed with their skin! Shouldn’t be worrying about it at their age.

Itmwtoty · 24/01/2024 21:47

There's a big difference between encouraging a bit of skincare with kids washing their faces and using a bit of moisturizer and kids wanting drunk elephant and needing a skincare fridge. Best thing for their skin is probably no make up.

Beetlebumz · 24/01/2024 21:47

Can understand a simple routine but expensive stuff can be damaging to young skin

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 24/01/2024 21:47

Not at all because she’s not on TikTok. If she was, I’d encourage her to follow the many dermatologists who advise against letting pre-teens use adult skincare as it destroys their natural skin barrier and will lead to all sorts of skin problems in later life.

CopperLion · 24/01/2024 21:51

Drunk Elephant for kids is sad - so expensive and full of acids, retinol and other stuff they shouldn’t be using on delicate young skin. Bloody TikTok.
