Is your year 5/6 child newly obsessed with all things ‘skincare’ ??

My year 6 child is absolutely obsessed, it’s come about in the last month. It’s all she talks about and spends hours on the Sephora website.

Apparently this is a ‘thing’ at the moment in this age group.

Is this the same in your house and where did this come from? Everything she wants is ££££!

Nope, my 10 year old DD finds me a terrible nag when I have to remind her every morning and every night to wash and moisturise her face. I've just given her her first SPF to start wearing daily and she is not happy with me

I've know doubt my younger DD will probably be the 10 year old obsessed with skincare though, she loves to come to Boots with me and look at all the fancy skincare and makeup (and ask me to buy her a Dior lipgloss because she thought it looked pretty--hard pass on that one DD)

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 24/01/2024 21:56

My niece isn’t, can barely get the little scruffbag to brush her hair.

My teens friends are all obsessed but that’s because puberty has hit hard and some of them are struggling with skin concerns bless em. They’re all on the Byoma, Inkey List and CeraVe which is a reasonable price point.

Drunk Elephant make some fairly intense skincare that I wouldn’t hold near a 9 year old let alone let them slather themselves in it so I hope they’re sticking to the plain bits and not going near any actives like acid or retinol.

Notfastjustfurious · 24/01/2024 21:56

No neither of my dd's are into this. They don't have tik tok though. It's hard enough to get them to do basic showers/deodorant/lip balm never mind a skincare regime.

@baubletits, are you really getting your 10 year old to wear an spf in January?

Peacelily001 · 24/01/2024 21:58

Beetlebumz · 24/01/2024 21:47

Can understand a simple routine but expensive stuff can be damaging to young skin

Exactly! A lot of these products contain actives such as retinol which are definitely not needed on young skin.

I find it really sad tbh, their skin is pretty much perfect at that age!

I can hardly get my yr 5 DD to be bothered about washing her face. I think this is a good few years away for us (hopefully)

Ditto!

She loves a bath bomb but has shown no interest in facial skincare yet, thankfully.

Gowlett · 24/01/2024 22:01

Gone are the days when you’d be lucky if your pocket money stretched to a Constance Carroll roller ball lip gloss. Or a totally horrible lipstick in a fetching shade of bubblegum pink…

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 24/01/2024 22:03

My 9 year old niece is obsessed with stuff like this because of TikTok. She got skincare and makeup for Xmas.

My 8.5 year old dd doesn’t know what TikTok is and it’s a struggle to get her to wash any day! She got kinetic sand for Xmas 😅

asterel · 24/01/2024 22:04

God no, it’s as much as I can do to get the little soap dodger to wash her hair enough! I barely do any “skincare” myself. I did buy her some CeraVe face wash, but only I use it as far as I can tell!

She doesn’t have a phone or TikTok though. Seems ridiculous for ten year olds!

Chickpea17 · 24/01/2024 22:06

Yes very much so but only because I have a morning and night routine and she likes to be part of it. So she asked for moisturiser and handcream for Christmas last year 😂😂

Chickpea17 · 24/01/2024 22:07

Sorry read your post wrong thought you said 6 year old 😬

WafflesOrIceCream · 24/01/2024 22:12

It is so sad that girls are desperately trying to grow up so fast.

GrazingSheep · 24/01/2024 22:17

Read an article about this earlier this week.
The final sentence - how have we managed to create a world where kids who’ve barely started living are already thinking about how to preserve their youth?

minipie · 24/01/2024 22:22

No thankfully my 11 year old has no interest. She doesn’t have a phone or TikTok - she does watch youtube (including some right rubbish) but hasn’t gone down this path.

sofasofa42 · 24/01/2024 22:24

My daughter (6) has suddenly started about us both having spa days. She bought the mop bucket out yesterday and demanded I put my feet in it and put cucumber on my eyes.
It's no doubt YouTube which I have now stopped. We do not allow Tik Tok at all. I am not sure I really know what it is! I am old though .

happysuki · 24/01/2024 22:28

At 10 I remember I had some spots so my mum bought me some Clearasil face wash, Clearasil moisturiser which I used religiously & some concealer.
I didn't even read magazines until I was older than 12 but I was influenced by my mum & also by my older friends, now girls of 10 may have TikTok & even if they're not allowed online their friends are.
At varying stages between 9-13 were the age myself & my friends gradually became aware of our appearances, of boys, got into skincare & makeup & that was nearly 30 years ago.
So it's hardly surprising that some girls are into skincare at 10 now. Especially as there's so much more knowledge & information available about skincare.
When I was ten it was all about spot prevention & or putting on some of your mum's face cream (usually Ponds or Oil of Olay iirc)!

I didn't learn about spf until my late teens, although my mum luckily convinced me to slather the spf15 on my face in the summer as a kid in the uk ( we didn't go abroad).
I just think it's pretty harmless & part of growing up really.
And like with other items, just because a 10 year old wants an expensive skincare item doesn't mean she should be given it, if she's into skincare & makeup but short of money she should be taught at an early age about the art of finding good dupes.

Notalldogs23 · 24/01/2024 22:31

My cousin was really proud of her DD asking for - and of course getting - a skincare fridge for her 12th birthday.

She saw it as a sign that her DD was growing up, that bit closer to being mums best friend.

Ohyoudodoyou · 24/01/2024 22:35

By 'eck, it were soap on a rope, Anne French and roller bubblegum lip gloss when I was a kid...
TikTok has a a helluva lot to answer to!

FrenchFancie · 24/01/2024 22:40

Nope, dd is a bit of a soap dodger at the best of times so there’s absolutely no chance of her hitting the expensive skin care. I have enough arguments about the necessity of daily deodorant application…..

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 24/01/2024 22:42

I'd be horrified if my granddaughters were.
So would their parents.
They can do irreparable damage at that age. Don't give in.

Silverbirch7 · 24/01/2024 22:47

CopperLion · 24/01/2024 21:51

Drunk Elephant for kids is sad - so expensive and full of acids, retinol and other stuff they shouldn’t be using on delicate young skin. Bloody TikTok.

This, I overheard a 10/11 year old in shop saying she really needed face serum , she really didn't..

Mariposistaaa · 24/01/2024 22:50

Meredusoleil · 24/01/2024 21:07

My Y10 dd1 is, but not Drunk Elephant. It's more of an 'everything must have spf in it' obsession tbh.

Please roll with that!
Having watched my gran suffer with skin cancer for years and years. Bit of a sun worshipper in the 70s!

Notthatcatagain · 24/01/2024 22:53

After spending 15 years working as a plastic surgery nurse, I promise you that a decent spf is very important. Factor 30 minimum, the younger they start the better and yes all year round. In very sunny weather, I theory several times a day, or wear a hat

StringTheory1 · 24/01/2024 22:56

My y5 DD won’t even agree to a twice-weekly shower! 🤣

We were reading a book this evening which referred to some items of make-up - she asked me “what’s mascara?”…. When I told her she looked bemused and wondered why anyone would bother to put paint on their eyes.

She doesn’t have the internet / TikTok etc. She lost her brush last week & has just sported a matted mane ever since, accessorised with manky football kit.

She’s mercifully free of all this nonsense skincare insidiousness you speak of! 😊
