What’s going on with my Marmite?

I definitely remember thinking Marmite had become stiffer. This was possibly around last winter, because I put it down to the house being so cold.
The last couple of jars of Marmite have been relatively runny. Probably like it was before. However, now that I’m used to it being so thick I can eat a heaped spoon of it without spilling it, it seems too runny.
is it just me, or are they fucking about with the consistency of marmite?

I have seen these and am tempted but something deep within me feels strongly that Marmite belongs in glass jars. 😂

We always also have glass marmite in, fir travelling purposes. We get through an awful lot, we need the big tubs to keep up with demand.

I had a new secretly, it was soft but not runny. Seemed fine to me. I save the truffle one for a treat

Secretly 🤷‍♀️
New jar recently

I bought two jars of Marmite at the same time, intending to take one to work. I ended up absent-mindedly opening both at home and using them in parallel for a while, until I took one to work.

One jar was dark and glossy, the Marmite stretched out in a treacly way when scooped, and oozed slowly so that the surface in the jar always flattened out by the time I came for more. The other was paler and stiffer. Scooping left a hole that did not refill, and there were no trailing strands of Marmite stretching from the spoon. It looked and behaved more like Vegemite.

The two jars of Marmite taste the same. Weird.

Marmite got so thick it used to trip the toast as I spread it, so I got Aldi's own brand marmite, and it was brilliant....runnier and easily spread. So now I buy that.

But perhaps proper brand Marmite is going runnier too? It is much better that way.

I've eaten marmite every day of my life (almost), and have been very brand loyal to this if not anything else really.

I always thought it was just temperature that did it? I have tried Aldi and other supermarkets own recently and they tend to be more spreadable. And... and I never thought I'd say it... they Taste the same (unlike Vegemite which is just weird)...

I am going to have to report this post as offensive. Grin

My latest jar is hard. When I try to spread it on my hot, buttered toast, it doesn't spread and breaks the toast up and I end up with it all stuck on the knife. I've not had this before. 😪

LenaLamont · 25/01/2024 13:50

I've been blaming it on temperature - we definitely keep the kitchen colder since heating costs went up!

Given that Marmite was created by Satan himself and produced by his numerous demons I suggest that you direct your complaints to the Dark Lord of the Underworld.

Mumaway · 25/01/2024 14:16

I learned from my DD1 recently that they blend batches of marmite to try to maintain some consistency as it comes out different every time due to how it's made. Assume they have a range of tolerance for taste and texture

Oh I love the truffle one, but very sadly my DD has also discovered it ......

Davros · 25/01/2024 18:43

I keep it for best. It's my birthday today so I splurged and let the cat have a lick

Ellmau · 25/01/2024 19:32

Is anyone leaving the lid off?

I don't know, but I do know the taste is not as strong as it was in my youth. Back in the day, little dabs were enough on my toast. These days I find I have to spread it all over.

Definitely this. I wonder if they sell more now because it makes you use more. I go through a jar 2 or 3 times more quickly than I once did. I once put a half a teaspoon into stock for homemade soup. Now I put a whole teaspoon. I easily put a teaspoon on two slices of toast now.
