What’s going on with my Marmite?

I definitely remember thinking Marmite had become stiffer. This was possibly around last winter, because I put it down to the house being so cold.
The last couple of jars of Marmite have been relatively runny. Probably like it was before. However, now that I’m used to it being so thick I can eat a heaped spoon of it without spilling it, it seems too runny.
is it just me, or are they fucking about with the consistency of marmite?

I've definitely noticed changes in consistency in the last few jars we've had, we get through a lot of the stuff! Latest one is really runny!

Changingplace · 24/01/2024 14:05

Mine was really runny recently! I wonder if they’ve had issues with their supply, I thought it was just me

Seeline · 24/01/2024 14:06

The stuff in the squeezy pot is definitely runnier, so maybe it's production issues and they've been putting the squeezy stuff in jars?

MagpiePi · 24/01/2024 14:08

I couldn't comment on the consistency but I'm quite pleased to see its not just me that eats it with a spoon.

KnickerlessParsons · 24/01/2024 14:08

I don't know, but I do know the taste is not as strong as it was in my youth. Back in the day, little dabs were enough on my toast. These days I find I have to spread it all over.

Noshferatu · 24/01/2024 14:11

We had a really thick jar a few months ago! Like so thick it resisted spreading, more like the consistency of Vegemite. Haven’t had a runny one yet though.

Nestofwalnuts · 24/01/2024 14:12

I'm the only one who eats it so it lasts a while. I notice it's soft when you first open the pot but gets successively stiffer so by the end of the jar it is very thick but when you open a jar it is softer.

That's so true. I thought I'd just developed a taste for shedloads of malty salt!

JeMangeUnCroissant · 24/01/2024 14:15

YES!! My family take the piss out of me and my marmite (the absolute wrong'uns!) so I've resisted ranting to them about this. Yes, generally in the last 8 months? a year? I've found the consistency to be thicker. But then my last jar was runnier. This jar back to being thick again. What are they playing at!?

trulyunruly01 · 24/01/2024 14:18

I can't get the usual Marmite locally
Only the reduced sugar one.

How bizarre - I came on here to say exactly the opposite!!

Edited

You could be me 😂Definitely thicker and my toast gets destroyed by chunks of bread on my knife! It’s really annoying me !

GasPanic · 24/01/2024 14:27

Could it be that the marmite is just the same as it always was, but the world is getting more bendy and wibbly around it ?

Worth a thought.

LaChatte · 24/01/2024 14:30

I wish this was my problem with Marmite, since I caught covid 3 years ago I can now taste the fucking celery in it. Gutted.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 24/01/2024 14:30

I thought it was my imagination!

It's been weirdly thick for the last 2 jars or so - have to put some onto the toast and wait for it warm up before it will spread. Annoying.

That is worth considering... 🤔

Paw2024 · 24/01/2024 15:08

Mine seems alright but I only have the XO one

Sleeptastic · 24/01/2024 15:13

Very thick here - I end up heating it in the microwave to soften it.

penjil · 24/01/2024 15:14

Marmite got so thick it used to trip the toast as I spread it, so I got Aldi's own brand marmite, and it was brilliant....runnier and easily spread. So now I buy that.

But perhaps proper brand Marmite is going runnier too? It is much better that way.

This is so true! I use much more than I used to!

The whole jar?! Or just a bit?

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 24/01/2024 16:59

I started premixing a little bowl of spread and marmite for DS’s packed lunches because the marmite was a bugger to spread in the mornings.
I’ve noticed I can’t seem to find the big jars for a couple of weeks which is a worry.

Wincher · 24/01/2024 17:02

I have also noticed it getting stiffer but recently opened a new jar which seems very runny. But it could just be it stiffening up when it’s been open a while

Footle · 24/01/2024 17:06

@KnickerlessParsons , taste buds become less sensitive as you get older. That's probably why you need more Marmite to get the same kick.

Topseyt123 · 24/01/2024 17:11

Our most recent jar of actual Marmite (as in, not the supermarket own brand ones) was very stiff. I might as well have been trying to spread rock on my toast. It had only been kept in the kitchen cupboard.

Tesco Yeast Extract is much more spreadable and tastes perfectly acceptable to me. I usually buy it instead of Marmite.
